The world exploded.
One moment, Kai was staring at Torin's lifeless eyes, a cold fury simmering in his veins. The next, the trapdoor above them splintered as Aric's forces stormed into Oddesey. Shouts, the clash of steel, and the screams of terrified patrons filled the air, turning the familiar tavern into a chaotic battleground.
Adrenaline surged through Kai as he scrambled to his feet. Rolf roared, shoving Kai behind him as he met the first attacker with a brutal swing of his sword. Anya barked orders, her voice cutting through the din as she directed Oddesey's members to barricade doors and prepare for a fight. Mira, a wraith of deadly grace, melted into the shadows, her daggers glinting as she assessed the chaos.
"Fall back!" Rolf bellowed, his sword a whirlwind of steel. "Get to the tunnels!"
Anya shook her head, her eyes blazing with defiance. "We hold here! We know this place—they don't!"
Kai felt the weight of their conflicting opinions pressing down on him. *Defend or escape?* Each choice held its own risks, its own potential for disaster. He glanced at Rolf, whose face was grim as he fought to hold the line against a relentless onslaught. Then he looked at Anya, her eyes burning with determination as she rallied Oddesey's members around her.
*They're both right*, Kai realized. But time was running out. He had to make a decision—and fast.
"Rolf, hold the line!" Kai shouted, his voice cutting through the chaos. "Anya, prepare the tunnels! We split our forces—give us options!"
Rolf grunted in acknowledgement, his focus never wavering as he parried a blow that would have cleaved another man in two. Anya nodded sharply, already barking orders as she directed a group of Oddesey's members toward a hidden passage behind the bar.
"Mira, with me," Kai said, his gaze locking onto hers. "We secure the ledger."
Mira nodded silently and moved to his side, her senses on high alert. Together, they fought their way through the throng of panicked patrons and clashing soldiers toward the table where Kai had left his pack.
The Valerius ledger lay innocently on the table amidst overturned chairs and shattered glass. Kai snatched it up, feeling the weight of its secrets in his hands. This was their weapon against Aric, their key to unraveling his web of deceit. They couldn't afford to lose it.
"We need to get to the tunnels," Kai said, his voice grim. "Can you lead the way?"
Mira nodded and pointed toward a darkened corner of the room. "There's a passage behind the fireplace—it's our best bet."
As they moved toward the fireplace, a hulking figure stepped out of the shadows, blocking their path. It was a mercenary, his face scarred and his eyes cold with malice. He hefted a massive axe, its blade glinting in the flickering lamplight.
"The Prince," the mercenary growled, his voice raspy. "Aric wants you alive—but he didn't say anything about your little friend."
Mira stepped in front of Kai, her daggers appearing in her hands as if by magic. Her eyes narrowed, and a predatory smile curled her lips.
"You'll have to get through me first," she purred, her voice deceptively soft.
The mercenary laughed, a harsh and grating sound. "That's what I was hoping you'd say."
The two figures clashed in a whirlwind of steel and fury. Mira moved with blinding speed, her daggers darting and weaving like venomous snakes. The mercenary swung his axe with brute force, each blow capable of cleaving through bone and sinew.
Kai watched in awe and horror as Mira danced around the mercenary's attacks, her movements fluid and graceful. He knew she was more than capable of holding her own, but the mercenary was strong—and relentless.
Suddenly, Mira feinted to the left, then darted to the right, her daggers flashing as she struck with deadly precision. The mercenary roared in pain as one dagger pierced his arm and another sliced across his throat. He staggered backward, his eyes wide with disbelief, before collapsing to the floor with a sickening thud.
Mira turned to Kai, her expression grim. "Let's go," she said, her voice tight. "They'll be coming."
Together, they slipped behind the fireplace, disappearing into the darkness of the hidden passage. As they made their way through the narrow tunnels beneath Oddesey, Kai couldn't shake the feeling that they were running out of time. Aric's forces were closing in, and he knew that this was just the beginning of a long and bloody war.
They reached what they thought was safety, only to have more soldiers to fight against. They have been found.
