She arrived home just after one in the morning.
Thinking I was asleep, she didn't call out to me and went straight to the guest room.
I lay awake, reminiscing about the little moments from our seven years together.
She spent a long time on the phone in the guest room, her voice coy and intimate. It was undoubtedly Fintan on the other end.
When I got up in the morning, she had already prepared breakfast.
There were over-easy eggs, my favorite.
She apologized, "I was tied up at the office until late last night, didn't have time to go to the restaurant. You're not mad at me, are you?"
As she spoke, she leaned in to kiss my forehead.
I reached for the fried egg, dodging her kiss.
She seemed taken aback.
A flicker of disappointment crossed her eyes.
The thought of those lips kissing another man made me feel disgusted.
Today, my task was still to follow her.
She went to the hospital for a blood transfusion, with Fintan holding her waist beside her.
"I heard that for all these years, it's been the same person donating blood to you? 800ml every month, who could it be?" Fintan wondered aloud.
"Some idiot, I guess. Who else would be willing to donate so much blood every month?" Serenity said dismissively.
If I didn't love her to my core, I truly wouldn't have been willing.
Even the doctors scold me for donating too frequently.
But if I don't donate, she'd have nothing. The entire city only had two people with blood types compatible with hers.
The other person was in poor health and couldn't donate blood at all.
Fintan gave her a squeeze under her clothes. "You should be thankful for him. What if he doesn't donate? What would you do then?"
Serenity pinched Fintan's butt in return. "Don't jinx it."
A while later, they came out of the transfusion room.
Serenity's face was gloomy, with obvious confusion.
"Why didn't he donate? He hasn't missed a single time in these seven years. Once he even donated during a heavy snowstorm. Something must have happened this time."
Serenity speculated.
I should have donated blood yesterday. I had planned to get fitted for a suit and then go give her one last donation.
To see things through to the end.
But she threw me aside and fell into another man's arms, so I ultimately canceled my blood donation appointment.
The blood center called me yesterday too, but I didn't answer.
Serenity made a few phone calls. I heard her asking about the donor's name and number.
I don't know what was said on the other end of the line, but her face still showed disappointment and worry.
Fintan gently tapped her nose. "Don't worry, there's bound to be a solution."
They walked to the car in an embrace.
They both got into the back seat.
Through the car window, I saw Serenity press herself against Fintan's chest.
Before long, the car began to shake violently.
