"Really?! ...You really want to come back?" The voice on the other end, after initial joy, suddenly became hesitant.
I looked at my sallow skin through the mirror and chuckled bitterly, "As long as you don't mind how I look."
"No, watching you hold another woman's hand three years ago is my biggest regret. Now, three years later, just say the word and I'll come get you right away."
"No matter how you've changed, you're still... my Romeo."
After hanging up, Melody sent me the flight information. Tomorrow morning, she would come here to pick me up personally.
A weight lifted from my heart. I placed the folder I had been clutching tightly in the nursery on the second floor.
Initially, right after the surgery, Faye looked at me with sympathy in her eyes.
"Asher, once you've recovered, let's have a baby, okay?"
As if to prove she meant it, the very next day she hurriedly set up a crib and carefully arranged the toys she had personally selected.
At that time, I was certain Faye loved me.
But true feelings can change so easily. Three months later, she hired the young Soren into the company.
I shook my head and dragged my exhausted body to bed to sleep. Early at 7 AM, I was shaken awake by Faye, reeking of alcohol.
She clung to me affectionately, whining, "Honey, please don't be angry anymore. You know I love you the most."
"Soren's really just a secretary, I swear. If you don't like him, I'll fire him on the spot!"
"I shouldn't have upset you. You just had surgery. I promise he won't appear around you anymore, okay?"
I stared at Faye in bewilderment, utterly confused by her drunken confessions.
Picking up my phone, it all became clear. Last night, she'd been caught by the paparazzi in a private rendezvous with her secretary, making headlines.
She'd managed to get the trending topic taken down overnight, but it had still nearly given Old Mr. Stratton a heart attack.
So this was just guilt after her affair.
Calmly, I shrugged off her hand without a trace of emotion: "Sure, why don't you block him right now so that he could not telephone you?"
Faye froze, then bit her lip as she did what I said in front of me.
"See? I'm serious. Can we just focus on our life together from now on?"
I felt a twinge of emotion when observing her determination. Had she truly seen the error of her ways?
But in the next second, a call came through from a contact labeled "Lovely Soren". "Ms. Stratton, why did you block me? We only said we wouldn't meet tonight, you naughty guy~"
Faye's face stiffened. She quickly hung up and turned off her phone, then casually brushed my bangs as if nothing had happened.
"Once you've recovered, we'll have another baby. Dad will be so happy too..."
I found her act amusing. I subtly avoided her hand, but Faye gently leaned into my embrace.
When she saw the blood on my chest, she sobered up instantly, her hands trembling as she asked, "What happened to you?"
I glanced at my watch. It was time.
Smiling at her, I said, "Don't worry, silly. I just cut my hand this morning."
Faye looked doubtful, not quite believing me. "Really?"
"Yeah, it's nothing. By the way, I've prepared a surprise for you in the nursery upstairs. Why don't you go take a look?"
Still not completely sober, she didn't notice the flaw in my words and excitedly went upstairs.
"Wait for me, I'll be right back."
I watched her go up with cold eyes, then left without looking back.
Melody's car had been waiting for a while.
She lovingly wrapped a scarf around me. "Asher, what happened to you?" I lowered my head, my eyes blurred with tears, taking one last look at the three years of memories.
When I heard Faye's heartbreaking screams coming from inside the mansion, I smiled with satisfaction.
"Let's go. I won't look back again."
