Chapter 8: The Godslayer Loop

As Lila's clones raised their hands to form seals, all the clocks in the capital began to run backward. The gear hairpin in my embrace suddenly pierced my skin, and the scorching sands of time flowed through my veins toward my heart—it was the time capsule buried by five-year-old Lila, now unsealing the memories of nine hundred and ninety-nine cycles of reincarnation.

"Brother always makes the wrong choice,"the real Lila licked the sands of time from the corner of her lips, her hair tips beginning to crystallize,"the last time you chopped off my head, the way the blood splashed on the Council's throne was quite beautiful..."

I crushed the throat of the first attacking clone with my bare hands, and from her neck leaped a miniature hourglass, sealing a moment of my near-death experience from one of the cycles.Dark elements condensed into a blade of time in my palm, but the severed limbs of the clone turned into gears and reassembled themselves.

"The one thousand three hundredth time,"the voice of the Shadow Moon envoy seeped out from all the clocks,"let's see if the Godslayer can this time..."

The sound of an explosion cut off the mockery.I detonated the light and dark bombs hidden in the temporal rift, and the specially made mechanical wombs of the Council melted in the intense light. The clones suddenly all froze, their pupils'gears turning simultaneously toward the northwest—toward the direction of our mother's cemetery.

"Lila!"I hurled a shadow chain to bind the original's wrist,"the symbol you draw in the cemetery's cellar every cycle..."

Time and space suddenly stood still. The eternal tear on her eyelashes reflected the blade of time that was striking at my back, the curvature of the blade identical to the birthday gift I had given her three hundred years ago.

The dull sound of metal piercing flesh exploded in my ears.I turned to see the blade protruding from the envoy's chest, the hand holding the knife belonging to Clone No.67,who was vaporizing—her lingering smile was exactly the same as that of eight-year-old Lila.

"Brother finally figured it out..."The original Lila's heart gear cracked open,"every time you die for me,that's the real key to restart the cycle."

The cemetery ground collapsed with a roar, revealing the buried temporal core.Countless of my skeletons were piled into an altar, each with a blade of time piercing its chest. The masks of the Shadow Moon envoys shattered one after another, revealing the mechanized faces of Father, the Cardinal, and Roger.

"How touching,"Father's mechanical arm twisted off his own head, and from within his cavity crawled the Council's core, covered in raven patterns,"if it weren't for the need of the Godslayer's soul to restart the epoch..."

Lila suddenly seized the blade of time and stabbed it into her own heart. The moment the golden gear shattered, all the clones turned into streams of light that poured into my left eye.The power of nine hundred and ninety-nine cycles surged through my veins, and I saw the final seal on the temporal core—starlight words written by Lila with her eternal tear:

"He who kills me,saves me."

The moment the blade of time pierced the Council's core, the entire capital began to collapse into a temporal singularity.Lila's gradually translucent body smiled in the intense light, her final lip movement perfectly overlapping with Mother's last words at her death:

"The key is in the gear."

As the light swallowed everything,I clutched Lila's crystallized hairpin and fell into the void. The ruins of the Council building reassembled beneath me,and this time I landed at the starting point of the cycle—the dark, sunless underground altar when I was ten.

The bloodied gear in my palm grew hot,and I smiled gently at the cowering young Lila in the corner:

"This time,I'll be the one to slit Father's throat first."
