Chapter 12: The Abandoned Bookstore

In this quiet neighborhood, the daytime clamor gradually faded, and a sense of tranquility lingered in the air. Olivia, Ethan, and Jin silently slipped into an abandoned old bookstore. The exterior of the bookstore had faded, its windows covered with thick layers of dust, as though it had been abandoned for years. Stepping inside, the air was filled with the scent of paper, ink, and dust, and the shelves on the walls were lined with yellowed books. But these books were not their true focus. The real secret lay deep within the bookstore.

"Here," Jin whispered, pushing open an old wooden door that creaked loudly, revealing a narrow staircase leading to the basement. The steps groaned under their weight, as if each one was telling the history of this hidden place.

The basement was cramped, with dim light spilling from a worn-out chandelier, and the floor was covered in dust. The walls were thick with dust and cobwebs, and in the center of the room, a table was piled with various electronic devices. Jin walked over to the table and quickly powered up a computer, the screen lighting up with a string of complex code. He expertly typed on the keyboard, trying to connect with a mysterious figure known as "Zero." However, a few seconds later, the screen flashed a red warning: "Network connection lost, location tracking activated."

"Damn it, their technology is more advanced than I expected," Jin muttered through gritted teeth, his brow furrowing in frustration. Clearly, he had not anticipated things escalating to this point.

Olivia remained calm, her gaze unwavering, with no sign of hesitation. "We have to find another way," she said in a low, steady voice, as though she had already foreseen this outcome.

Ethan glanced around, noticing an old server in the corner. A sudden idea flashed in his mind, and he quickly walked over. "Maybe we can use the dark web to bypass the 'Obsidian Society's' surveillance."

Jin was immediately intrigued by the suggestion and nodded. "Worth a try."

They set up a temporary network connection and accessed the dark web. The vast sea of information in the depths of the dark web was overwhelming, but after some searching, they finally found a mysterious hacker—"Phantom." A brief message soon appeared on the screen: "Want help? Show your sincerity."

Without hesitation, Olivia replied, "We need to decrypt the core files of the 'Obsidian Society.' This is a matter of life and death for countless people."

Phantom's reply came swiftly, tinged with coldness: "Infiltrate the 'Obsidian Society's' data center and retrieve the 'Hidden Shadows' files."

Olivia, Ethan, and Jin exchanged a glance, each of them aware that this would be an extremely dangerous mission. But they had no choice but to proceed.

As night fell, the three donned black tactical gear and silently made their way to the 'Obsidian Society's' data center. Located on the outskirts of the city, the center was in a desolate area, seemingly unnoticed by anyone. Using his technical skills, Ethan bypassed the outer security system, and the trio successfully infiltrated the building.

Deep inside the data center, they arrived at a heavily guarded data room. The room exuded a cold atmosphere, with massive servers humming low in the background. Just as they were about to begin, a ghostly figure silently appeared before them. Her eyes were sharp, and her figure was like a shadow, ready to vanish into the darkness at any moment.

"Phantom," Olivia whispered her name.

Phantom nodded slightly, calmly saying, "I'm here to help you." Her voice was as cold as ice, but Olivia could sense the complex emotions in her eyes. They shared an unspoken history—Olivia's father had saved her life during a mission years ago. Since then, Phantom and Olivia had maintained an unspoken understanding.

With Phantom's help, the trio successfully breached the final defense and entered the core area of the data room. Olivia, Jin, and Ethan quickly began downloading the files. However, just as the download was nearly complete, alarms blared suddenly, and the entire data center went into high alert. The sound of the alarms was accompanied by the rush of heavily armed security personnel flooding into the data room.

A fierce battle broke out. Ethan used his speed and skills to hack into the security system, creating temporary chaos. Jin and Olivia, along with Phantom, quickly moved to repel the invading enemies. Although they managed to escape, the data center's security system was activated, and their tracks were now exposed.

Back at the safehouse, the trio quickly opened the downloaded "Hidden Shadows" files. As the screen lit up, the contents of the file appeared before them, and Olivia's heart skipped a beat. The document detailed a digitalization experiment of human consciousness carried out by the "Obsidian Society." What was most shocking, however, was the revelation that Olivia's father had been the mastermind behind this experiment! This discovery sent waves of turmoil through her mind. She had never imagined that the father she had always believed was fighting for justice had been involved in such horrifying experiments.

At that moment, Phantom sent another message: "Ready for the real challenge?"

Olivia's eyes shone with determination, knowing full well that there was no turning back. She had connected the secret of her father with the dark forces' conspiracy, and a stronger resolve burned within her. She would stop at nothing to uncover the truth and save the innocent lives caught in the web of lies.
