Ren Asakura had a smile on his face. From the corner of her eye, Mai could see that youthful expression.
"You're not… a Dragon King, are you?"
She finally voiced the question that had been bothering her.
Ren Asakura looked extremely disappointed, as if comparing him to a four-legged lizard was deeply insulting.
"Dragon King? You mean those reptiles? Come on, which one of your eyes thinks I look like one of those? I could blow that whole bunch away in a single breath."
Mai thought to herself: You just love bragging, don't you.
"Anyway, have you thought about my offer? Wanna come work for me? Monthly salary of 1500, full benefits, room and board included—pretty generous, right?"
Jiu De Mai: "????"
Was this guy another crappy boss? She was a high-level hybrid, a trained ninja, terrifyingly powerful—and this guy thought she was only worth 1500 a month?
Her coworker who binged on chips probably spent more than that on snacks.
"Hey now, you can't think like that…"
Ren Asakura seemed to read her mind.
"You're my prisoner now, you know what that means? It means I can do whatever I want with you. A pretty kunoichi like you, falling into the hands of a guy in the prime of puberty—you know where that usually goes. So be smart and cooperate. I'll even give you a raise—make it 1600. Final offer."
Mai was completely speechless.
Was this… some kind of twisted bargaining?
"You're really pushing it! Even a dog wouldn't work for 1600!"
Ren Asakura sighed, exasperated.
"Then I guess I'll have to kill you?"
Mai looked baffled. Weren't they just negotiating?
Then—without warning—Ren Asakura tossed her out the window.
This was the 20th floor. Over 40 meters from the ground.
The building was all smooth glass. Even for a hybrid like Mai, a fall from that height would turn her into pulp.
She truly hadn't expected that.
As her body flew out the window, her mind went blank.
Faced with the very real threat of death—even a highly trained ninja like Mai felt fear.
Back inside, Ren Asakura stood at the window, wearing a mischievous grin, as if watching a good show.
Then came the weightless sensation.
Her body accelerated downward.
Cars rushed past on the street below.
Ren Asakura seemed to sense something.
"If you're trying to save her—get lost."
The spiritual trace that had been connected to Mai vanished instantly upon detecting a certain something.
In the face of death, all beings are equal.
Mai couldn't help but close her eyes.
A montage of her life flashed in her mind.
So this is how it ends… Dying over a glorified babysitting gig. Not worth it. Not worth it at all.
She thought about her ex-boyfriends.
There… seemed to be a lot of them.
Just as she was about to hit the ground—
The pain and death she had imagined never came.
She was caught in someone's arms.
Ren Asakura held her tightly.
Couldn't lie—the figure in his arms was pretty impressive.
"Still alive, huh?"
Mai struggled to open her eyes—and saw Ren Asakura's irritatingly smug face.
"What are you trying to do?!"
"Obviously, something more exciting. If you wanted thrill—let's go all the way."
Mai had a very bad feeling.
Ren Asakura let go with one hand, grabbed her ankle with the other—and hoisted her upside down.
This wasn't an anime. There was no anti-gravity skirt.
Mai clutched her skirt tightly, eyes full of fury as she glared at Ren Asakura.
The humiliation! The disgrace of a kunoichi!
Ren Asakura chuckled, stepped forward with his left foot—and like he was shot putting—he flung her again.
"Aaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!"
Screams echoed through the air.
Even Lu Mingfei, who was at home, heard them.
"Let's have three seconds of silence."
After landing again, Mai felt like she had just ridden a rollercoaster going 220 km/h.
Then Ren Asakura slung her over his shoulder.
Literally, just tossed her over his shoulder and walked off.
"Damn it, I'm a gorgeous woman! How could I be treated like this?!"
Jiu Mai couldn't help but doubt her own charm at this point.
---
Inside Lu Mingfei's tiny room, Mai was tightly bound with thick hemp rope.
Her slender figure was all the more accentuated under the restraints.
Lu Mingfei nervously glanced at the door, worried his aunt might burst in at any moment.
If she saw this scene, there would be no explaining it.
A teenage boy… tying up a beautiful woman and bringing her home?
Any sane person would call the cops.
"Hehehehe!"
Ren Asakura rubbed his hands together, his mischievous grin sending a shiver down Mai's spine.
"What… are you trying to do?"
"Well, if a kunoichi gets caught, what else can I do?"
Ren Asakura licked his lips.
Lu Mingfei spoke up at this moment.
"Group leader, this really isn't okay. Pretty sure this is illegal."
"What are you afraid of? With me here, even if the heavens fall, I'll be riding them like a horse."
Then Ren Asakura reached out with his "villainous" hand—
And pulled Mai's wallet and phone from her pocket.
He opened the wallet.
Nice—there were several thousand inside.
"Mingfei! Let's split the loot!"
Lu Mingfei coughed awkwardly. "Uh… this doesn't feel right."
But right there, in front of Mai's face, the two of them divvied up all the cash from her wallet.
Lu Mingfei couldn't help it.
He was just a broke student, barely scraping by on pocket money.
And hey, in a lawful society, this kind of cash was hard to come by.
Mai stared blankly at the two of them as they split her 2000. A gorgeous woman like her, tied up right there—and they didn't even blink. Just robbed her like it was nothing.
Was she really worth less than 2000?
After finishing with the cash, Ren Asakura pulled out her ID cards, passport, and a gold credit card.
"Hmm… doesn't look like anything valuable."
Mai twitched at the corner of her mouth. This guy seriously has no idea what he's looking at.
Once the wallet was cleaned out, they moved on to her phone.
But it was locked.
Ren Asakura grinned and asked sweetly:
"What's the password?"
"Birthday."
Before Mai could even finish speaking, Ren Asakura already had the phone unlocked.
"Mind reader?"
He scrolled through the phone, opened the contacts list, and made a call.
The phone was picked up in just a couple of seconds.
Ren Asakura spoke immediately:
"Hey, bastard—starting today, I'm officially announcing that Mai is quitting your sorry company and switching to mine. This isn't a request, it's a notification. If you've got a problem, I'll kick your ass. That's all—got it?"
On the other end, the boss listened to the bizarre message with a helpless expression.
After a short pause, he replied:
"Of course, no problem… but can I at least speak with my former employee? I need to settle her last paycheck."
Ren Asakura was surprised.
"Whoa! Not bad! A boss who still pays up after an employee ditches without notice? Guess he's not as scummy as I thought."
