Chapter 19: A Mercenary’s Path

Joining the Guild

The Mercenary Guild was loud and chaotic, filled with sellswords and bounty hunters looking for work. It was the perfect place to move unnoticed.

Kael entered quietly, his posture relaxed but his senses sharp. He had worked as a mercenary before—in another life. The guilds hadn't changed.

At the front desk, a tired officer barely looked up.

"You looking for work?"

Kael nodded.

The officer slid a worn parchment forward. "Name?"

Kael paused for a fraction of a second.

"…Veyne."

The officer shrugged and stamped the document. "Fine. No rank, no privileges. Take what you can handle."

An iron badge landed on the counter. Kael took it and walked away.

He picked low-profile jobs—guard duty, deliveries, tracking lost cargo. Just enough to make money without drawing attention.

He moved like a veteran, efficient but never overperforming. No one questioned a quiet mercenary who did his job and left.

Days passed, and Kael remained a ghost in the guild. Listening. Watching. Waiting.

One night, while collecting payment, Kael overheard a conversation.

"House Veltrion's hiring mercenaries?" a sellsword muttered. "That's unusual."

Kael kept his expression blank, but his mind sharpened.

House Veltrion. A corrupt noble house. Ruthless. Discreet. And more importantly—one with ties to the Divine Order.

If they were suddenly hiring outside help, it meant something was happening.

Kael didn't need fame or reputation. He needed information.

He walked to the mission board. The job was still there.

He took it.
