The wedding was called off within the hour, but not in the way I had imagined.
There was no grand announcement, no outpouring of sympathy. No one from the Lancaster family tried to stop the guests from leaving or salvage the day. Instead, the whispers started.
Did you hear? The bride walked out.
What happened?
Something about Daniel…
But it didn't take long for the truth to spread. And once it did, the narrative shifted.
Maybe she should've expected it.
Daniel was never the settling-down type.
Did she really think a Lancaster would be faithful to her?
By the time I made it back to my hotel suite, still in my wedding dress, the humiliation had sunk its claws deep into me. The makeup that had been so carefully applied that morning was now smudged from the tears I had fought to hold back. The perfect curls in my hair were beginning to fall.
I sat on the edge of the bed, staring blankly at the floor, until a sharp knock on the door startled me.
I hesitated before standing up. Maybe it was my father, checking on me. Maybe my mother had finally decided to make an appearance.
But when I opened the door, it wasn't family.
It was Vivian Lancaster.
She stood there in an elegant black dress, as if she were attending a funeral instead of what should have been my wedding. And in a way, maybe she was—the funeral of my dignity.
"I thought I should come and see you," she said, her voice cool and detached.
I gritted my teeth. "You have nothing to say to me."
She ignored that, stepping inside like she owned the place. "I just wanted to be sure you understood something, dear. This… was inevitable. Daniel was never going to marry you."
My fingers clenched into fists at my sides.
Vivian gave a small, pitying smile. "You were never going to be one of us, Evelyn," she continued. "And now, well…" She sighed dramatically. "It's best that you move on. Quietly."
I narrowed my eyes. "What exactly are you saying?"
She smoothed a hand over her dress. "I'm saying that you should disappear."
I swallowed hard, but I refused to let her see my pain. "And if I don't?"
Her smile was razor-sharp. "Then you'll see just how powerful our family really is."
She turned to leave, pausing at the door. "You have no allies, Evelyn. No one will stand by you. And without support, you'll never win against us."
The door shut behind her.
I stood there, shaking.
They wanted me to vanish. To fade into obscurity while Daniel carried on without consequence.
But they had no idea who they were dealing with.
Because I wasn't disappearing.
I was coming for everything they had.
