The moment Nathaniel and I left the dining hall, I knew the real battle had begun.
The Lancaster family wasn't just seething—they were plotting.
And so was I.
Nathaniel guided me toward his private study, his grip firm but easy, as if he was both testing me and amused by the fire I had just unleashed. The second the door shut behind us, he turned to me, a smirk tugging at his lips.
"Well," he drawled, pouring himself another drink. "That was quite the performance."
I folded my arms. "It wasn't a performance. I meant every word."
He chuckled, taking a slow sip of his whiskey before stepping closer, his presence as imposing as ever. "Good." His gaze darkened slightly. "Because you just declared war, Evelyn. And trust me, they won't take it lightly."
"I don't expect them to."
Nathaniel studied me, something unreadable flickering behind his eyes. "I married you because I saw potential. I wanted a partner, not a trophy." He set his glass down. "But potential means nothing if you can't follow through."
I lifted my chin. "Then watch me."
For the first time since the wedding, his smirk faded. In its place, something closer to respect.
"Very well," he said. "Let's start your first lesson."
I didn't sit when he gestured to a chair. Instead, I walked to the window, staring out over the Lancaster estate.
"I don't need a lesson, Nathaniel. I need information."
Silence.
Then: "What kind of information?"
I turned to him slowly. "I want access to the Lancaster business records. The board. The financials. Everything."
Nathaniel chuckled, shaking his head. "And why would I do that?"
I stepped closer. "Because you need me."
He arched a brow. "Do I?"
I nodded. "You said it yourself. Daniel isn't fit to take over. And you don't trust the others." I let my voice soften just a fraction. "But you trust me, don't you?"
Nathaniel's gaze flickered.
A long, tense moment passed.
Then he exhaled, rubbing his jaw before giving me a look that was equal parts admiration and warning. "Careful, Evelyn. You might just become more dangerous than I anticipated."
I smiled. "That's the plan."
He studied me for another beat before finally nodding. "Fine. I'll give you access." He walked back to his desk and tapped a few keys on his laptop. "You'll receive credentials to the company database by morning."
Excitement buzzed beneath my skin.
This was it.
The first crack in the Lancaster family's armor.
With access to their empire's inner workings, I could start finding weaknesses.
Exploiting them.
Turning their own legacy against them.
Nathaniel watched me carefully. "Don't disappoint me, Evelyn."
I met his gaze head-on.
"I never do."
