Chapter 12: Betrayal Cuts Deep

The Lancaster estate was in chaos.

Security swarmed the grounds, legal teams were on frantic calls, and the family's stock had already taken a devastating hit. This wasn't just a scandal—this was war.

And the worst part?

I was about to be its first casualty.

Nathaniel's study door slammed behind me as he tossed a folder onto the desk. "Tell me the truth, Evelyn." His voice was controlled, but the storm in his eyes was deadly.

I crossed my arms. "I don't know what you're talking about."

He stepped closer, his presence suffocating. "Don't play games with me." He grabbed the folder, flipping it open to reveal printed emails—my emails. "These came from your account."

I froze.

My account?

Nathaniel's voice was steel. "The leaked documents. The files. The financial records. All of it came from an internal source." He pushed the folder toward me. "And it was you."

My heart pounded. This was a setup.

Someone had used my credentials. Someone had made it look like I betrayed him.

And I had a sinking feeling I knew exactly who.

I lifted my chin. "I didn't do this."

Nathaniel's expression didn't waver. "Then explain how your account accessed and sent these files to an anonymous source."

My fingers curled into fists. Daniel. Vivian. And now James Harrington. They had done this. They had worked together, leaked the files, and pinned it on me.

And Nathaniel was falling for it.

I took a step forward, forcing him to look me in the eye. "If I wanted to take you down, I wouldn't be sloppy enough to get caught." My voice was razor-sharp. "Someone set me up."

Nathaniel exhaled through his nose, pacing for a moment before turning back to me. "Who?"

I didn't hesitate. "Daniel. And Vivian."

He stiffened slightly, but his expression remained unreadable. "That's a serious accusation."

I scoffed. "And you think me leaking your own company's documents isn't?"

A muscle ticked in his jaw. "You have access. And you have motive."

I stared at him, anger curling in my chest. "And you think I'm stupid enough to destroy the very empire I'm trying to control?"

Silence.

His hesitation was all I needed to see.

He doubted me.

And that?

That hurt.

"I didn't do this," I said, softer this time.

Nathaniel studied me, his cold gaze searching for something—truth, guilt, a crack in my armor.

Finally, he sighed and turned away. "I don't have time for this."

I stiffened. "So you're just going to believe them?"

He didn't answer.

He didn't have to.

The doubt had already poisoned his mind.

My jaw clenched. Fine. If he wanted to second-guess me, if he wanted to fall into their trap—

Let him.

Because I had just learned something valuable.

The Lancaster family had joined forces with the enemy.

And now?

I was out for blood.
