Nathaniel Lancaster was a man who never showed his hand.
He was calculated, reserved, and dangerously intelligent.
But after today?
I had rattled him.
I had shaken the foundation of a family he spent years controlling.
And now, I wanted to know—what would he do next?
Lancaster Manor – Late Evening
I stepped into the study, expecting silence.
Instead, I found him.
Nathaniel sat behind his desk, a tumbler of whiskey in his hand, his posture as relaxed as ever. But his eyes?
They were watching me like a predator sizing up its prey.
"You've had an eventful day," he murmured, swirling his drink.
I tilted my head, closing the door behind me. "I take it you disapprove?"
His lips twitched—not quite a smile, but something close. "On the contrary, I'm impressed."
I narrowed my eyes. "You froze her accounts without hesitation."
He leaned back, studying me. "Vivian's mistake was underestimating you. I don't make the same mistake twice."
I took a slow step forward. "So, what now?"
Nathaniel took a sip of his drink before placing it down. "That depends."
"On?"
His gaze darkened slightly, the air shifting between us. "On whether you're planning to come for me next."
I exhaled a soft laugh. "If I were, would you stop me?"
His silence stretched.
Then, finally, he stood, stepping around the desk until he was in front of me.
His presence was overwhelming, the scent of whiskey and something distinctly him filling the space between us.
"I wonder…" he mused, his voice lower, more deliberate. "Are you playing this game to win, Evelyn?"
I held his gaze, refusing to look away.
"What else would I be playing for?"
Nathaniel studied me for a long moment, and for the first time since our marriage, something in his expression shifted.
Curiosity.
Intrigue.
And something else.
Something neither of us wanted to acknowledge just yet.
He smirked, reaching past me to grab his whiskey. "Then let's see how far you're willing to go."
I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
This was dangerous.
This thing between us.
And yet, I wasn't sure I wanted to stop it.
