Dark & Light – Chapter 9: The Journey Begins

The Decision

"Yeah… we need to move."

The words left Vael's lips heavier than he expected. He had made up his mind.

But the weight of the decision still sat in his chest.

He glanced at Rai, who was happily tearing into his dinner, completely unaware of the storm brewing around them.

Vael's fingers tightened around his cup.

For a hundred years, he had lived without conflict. Without bloodshed. He had built a quiet life. But deep down, he had always known…

It wouldn't last.

And now, he had to walk away from it all. Again.

He exhaled slowly, pushing away his thoughts.

"Rai."

Rai looked up mid-bite. "Hm?"

Vael rested his elbows on the table, expression unreadable. "We're leaving in the morning."

Rai blinked. "What? Why?"

Vael leaned back. "I found traces of demons searching for you."

Rai's breath hitched.

Vael continued. "They know you're here. And if they haven't found this place yet, they will soon."

Rai lowered his food slowly. "So… we're running?"

Vael's expression remained calm, but his fingers twitched slightly against the table. "We're moving to a safer place. I know somewhere we can go, but the journey will take a few days."

Rai nodded, absorbing the information.

For the first time, he felt a small weight in his chest. He had started getting used to this place.

But now… they had to leave it behind.

The Morning Departure

The next morning came faster than Rai expected.

By dawn, he and Vael had already packed their essentials—food, water, some supplies for the road.

Vael carried most of it, wordlessly handling everything with ease.

As Rai adjusted his bag, he turned to look at the tavern one last time.

This place had been his home for weeks. The first place he had felt… safe.

But now, it was just a reminder that nowhere was truly safe.

"Alright," Vael muttered.

Rai turned to see him pull a small, glowing stone from his pocket.

Before Rai could ask, Vael crushed it between his fingers.

The moment the stone shattered—the tavern disappeared.

Gone.

Not destroyed. Not abandoned. Just… gone.

Rai's eyes widened. "What—?"

Vael pocketed the dust that remained, expression neutral.

"Let's go."

Rai wanted to ask—what was that stone? How did it work? What had happened to the tavern?

But something about Vael's silence made him hold back.

So instead, he turned and followed.

The adventure had begun.

Meanwhile…

The air in Eden grew heavy.

The presence of something unnatural crept into its lands.

A shadow moved.

A single step cracked the earth beneath its weight.

The Demon Lieutenant was already on the way.

And so were Vael and Rai.

Will they make it in time?
