Lena couldn't sleep. The weight of the battle, the lives lost, the pressure of leadership—all of it kept her awake in the quiet hours of the night. She stood alone in her quarters, the core's interface glowing in the dim light. The room was silent except for the low hum of the device, which seemed to beckon her closer with each passing second.
"Just one more time," she whispered to herself, her fingers brushing lightly against the surface of the core. "Just one more time, and we can end this."
But even as she thought the words, a deep sense of unease settled over her. She had used the core before, but the consequences were always there, lingering in the back of her mind. It had changed her, shaped her in ways she couldn't understand. She wasn't sure if she could stop now.
"Lena."
Her breath caught at the sound of Tavon's voice behind her. She turned, her heart pounding in her chest.
"I know you're thinking about it," he said, his expression serious but not accusatory. "But I don't want you to make this decision alone."
Lena looked at him, and for a moment, she felt a flicker of warmth in her chest. Tavon had been her anchor through all of this—steadfast, reliable, and always by her side. But this was something she couldn't share. This decision, the temptation of the core, it was hers and hers alone.
"I don't need you to protect me, Tavon." Her voice was sharp, but the words didn't feel right. She wanted to push him away, but a part of her didn't want to. "I have to do this. For all of us."
Tavon took a step forward, his gaze unwavering. "We're in this together, Lena. If you let the core consume you, we all lose. I won't let that happen."
The intensity of his words struck her harder than she expected. "What if I can end this? What if I can win the war in one move?" She reached out to the core once more, her hand trembling as it hovered over the interface.
Tavon's voice softened. "And what happens to you after? What happens to all of us? We're already losing people. The core... it's not just a weapon. It's changing you. I can see it."
Lena withdrew her hand slowly, her heart torn between the desire for victory and the nagging fear of losing herself in the process. "I don't know if I can stop now."
Tavon's eyes searched hers, his concern evident. "Then let me help you."
For a moment, silence stretched between them, thick and charged. Then Lena nodded, her shoulders sagging in relief. "I don't know how much longer I can hold this together, Tavon."
Tavon stepped closer, his presence grounding her. "You don't have to do it alone. We're in this together."
