As the vanguard unit began their retreat, Erik rode at the front of the main force, his expression grim. The formation advanced slowly—far more slowly than Viston's earlier charge—most of the soldiers marching on foot.
Surrounding the main force, all the remaining pack horses had been tied together with ropes, forming a wide semi-circle around the troops.
From above, the whole unit looked like a city on the move.
Most of the Scorpion Nest's scouts had followed Viston's unit, while the few left behind had already been eliminated by Simon and the other Awakened fighters.
This delay was precious. Even if brief, it bought them a sliver more time—perhaps just enough to increase the odds of success.
"Will Viston make it back?" Gaul rode alongside Erik, his voice low.
"I don't know," Erik replied, eyes fixed forward, his face expressionless. "And it doesn't matter."
Gaul sighed, nodding in resignation.
