Gori Nuclear Power Plant (3)
The "Alpha Squad" belonging to the Gori Nuclear Headquarters wasn't part of the military. It was a group made up solely of "awakened" individuals-people with supernatural abilities.
Their main mission was to exterminate monsters around the power plant.
Right now, they were engaged in urban warfare against goblins.
"They're heading that way!"
"Two got past us!"
Standing in the path of the fleeing goblins was a man wielding an axe.
"Kiieee!"
"Kyaaah!"
The wounded goblins bared their teeth in an attempt to intimidate him.
But the man didn't even flinch.
When their bluff didn't work, the goblins hesitated briefly.
But this was a narrow alleyway, and they had no other route to escape.
Left with no choice, they charged at the man, aiming for his legs.
Slice-
The head of the first goblin flying forward was cleanly severed.
Even before its head hit the ground-
Slice!
A single swing from the axe decapitated the remaining goblin, ending the fight.
A middle-aged man who had been chasing after the goblins clapped his hands in admiration.
"Whew. Clean. Real clean!"
The man with the axe chuckled, shaking the blood off his weapon.
"Haha, it was nothing."
"Nothing? That was impressive!"
Seo Joo-won clapped him on the back, a smile glued to his face.
'This guy's no ordinary rookie.'
In fact, the two goblins had been intentionally let loose.
That was only natural.
They were a veteran party that had been hunting goblins for months now since the monsters began appearing. There was no way they'd make such a rookie mistake.
It was a kind of test-meant to evaluate the new recruit. And he had passed with flying colors.
'I didn't even need to step in.'
Seo Joo-won had been trailing close behind the goblins just in case something went wrong.
He could have stopped both goblins with his psychokinesis at any time.
But despite this being his first real battle, the rookie had proven his capabilities without a doubt.
'He's the real deal.'
Seo had been slightly concerned since the new guy didn't appear to have any special powers. But after seeing him swing that axe, he realized his worry had been for nothing.
"So, Min-jun. You said you were from Ulsan, right?"
"...Yes."
As soon as he said it, Seo Joo-won regretted it. Lee Min-jun's face instantly darkened.
'Crap, I forgot.'
Something bad must've happened to him in Ulsan. Every time it was
mentioned, his expression would turn grim.
"Ahem. Well, let's call it a day. Min-jun, things are only just beginning for you. Stay sharp."
"I'll do my best!"
"Good, good. Hold your position."
"Yes, sir!"
After Seo Joo-won walked off, Min-jun slowly raised the head he'd kept bowed.
The friendly smile he'd been wearing was gone-replaced by a scowl of irritation as he glared at the goblin corpses.
'Damn it. Do I really have to stoop to this?'
It was bad enough pretending to be human-a mere food source-but having to curry favor with one of them? That was particularly grating.
'... Still, I have to survive.'
Truth be told, he was already used to this. He'd acted as a spy among humans back in Ulsan as well.
But back then, he had been in charge-like a rancher raising livestock. And he had many allies.
Now, he was alone. Constantly anxious that his true identity might be discovered. Forced to watch the expressions of his prey.
It was miserable.
But before long, a smile returned to his face.
'Still... with this much food around, I can deal with it.'
To Lee Min-jun, the Gori Nuclear Power Plant was no different from an all-you-can-eat buffet.
Thinking about the thousands of prime prey packed into this place made his mouth water.
Of course, it wasn't like he could freely "dine" as he pleased.
'If only I could get rid of these guys first...'
The awakened-those with supernatural powers.
He used to look down on them.
But now, they terrified him.
He had seen with his own eyes how brutally those awakened in Ulsan had slaughtered his kin.
The only reason Min-jun had survived that massacre was thanks to his unique ability.
'Let's see what they're really capable of.'
Lee Min-jun brought his finger to his lips.
A sharp fang pierced the skin of his thumb.
Schlick-
At the same time, his body dispersed like smoke, and from within, a small bat emerged.
Transformed into a bat, Lee Min-jun flew toward the building where the operation was taking place.
He spotted his teammates searching the house through the windows and took a deep breath.
Then-
He emitted ultrasonic waves in all directions, ones that human ears couldn't
detect.
And that's when something strange happened.
"Griik?"
"Greeek?"
"Reek-!"
All the goblins within several hundred meters reacted.
In an instant, dozens of goblins rushed toward the building where the team was located.
"Sir! We have a problem!"
"What? What's going on all of a sudden?"
"The goblins! They're swarming us!"
"What?!"
Seo Joo-won quickly stuck his head out of the building and used his telekinetic powers, immediately realizing that the goblins were converging on their location.
"Damn it!"
Understanding the gravity of the situation, Seo Joo-won shouted loudly:
"Emergency! Everyone, regroup!"
Those who had been searching the building quickly rushed outside, and at the same time, goblins began pouring in from all directions.
"Griiik!"
"Krrk-kgh!"
"Screech!"
The reason goblins in the city were so dangerous was because they were intelligent enough to use human tools.
If one got hit by a goblin wielding a proper weapon, like a kitchen knife or a hammer, it could be fatal.
In a ruined world like this, proper medical treatment was hard to come by.
Even a single antibiotic pill was difficult to find, so even small wounds could become deadly.
That's why-
"Hngh!"
Seo Joo-won focused most of his telekinetic power on the weapons in the goblins' hands.
"Urgh!"
A kitchen knife flew from a goblin's hand and plunged into the side of another goblin nearby.
Scenes like that unfolded all around them.
At the same time, the members of Alpha Squad began to move.
Whoosh!
A fireball flew toward a goblin and exploded in brilliant flames.
"I'll hold them off!"
A burly man swung a fire axe, taking down the goblins charging at them one by one.
A transparent, armor-like barrier had formed around his body, and it served its purpose well, acting as solid protection.
Clang-!
A kitchen knife in a goblin's hand bounced off the light armor, and in the next moment, the man's axe slammed into the goblin's head.
Though it was a sudden crisis, Alpha Squad drew on their experience and overcame the situation admirably.
Still in his bat form, Lee Min-jun observed them for a while, then flew away from the scene.
Once he was a safe distance away, he returned to his human form and covered his mouth with all his strength.
"Kh-khk! Pff-!"
But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't stop the laughter from leaking out.
Clutching his stomach, he rolled on the ground, giggling for a long time before finally calming down.
"That's all they've got? Seriously?"
It was laughable.
Those guys were barely on par with the awakened ones who used to live in Ulsan.
"A masterpiece."
As expected.
The reason those people back in Ulsan had seemed abnormally strong was because they actually were abnormally strong.
"Yeah, no matter how strong the prey is, this is the level they're at!"
His appetite was stirred.
"Should I just kill them all here?"
But he soon shook his head.
Judging by their level, it wouldn't be difficult to kill every single one of them right there.
But drinking all of their blood at once, even for him, would be a bit too much.
Still, leaving them behind wasn't acceptable either.
"Humans with abilities like that tend to be tastier, you know."
If possible, he wanted to savor the delicious ones slowly.
Besides, if they all died, it would be awkward for him to go back to the Kori Nuclear Power Plant alone.
It would be suspicious if all his teammates died and he was the only one to survive.
"Ah. Wait a second."
Suddenly, Lee Minjun's expression hardened as he remembered that,
because of what he had done, the lives of those humans with delicious blood were now in danger.
"No!"
He immediately rushed back to the operation zone and started slaughtering the goblins.
"Kyaaaah!"
"Screeech!"
Splatter!
The team members looked shocked as Lee Minjun appeared, obliterating goblins left and right.
It was clear at a glance—he was showcasing a level of power on a whole different scale.
Before long, the last goblin's head was split by Minjun's axe.
"Is everyone okay? No one hurt?"
Seo Juwon let out a dry laugh as he looked at Minjun, whose breathing hadn't even quickened.
"Heh heh."
Then the others started reacting.
"Whoa, Minjun... you were this strong?"
"What the heck just happened?"
"Wow..."
Minjun gave a shy smile and said,
"It's nothing. Shall we head back now?"
No one knew.
That behind that smiling face... he was hiding a blade.
"Starting tonight, I'll eat you all. One by one.'
"
The nuclear power plant was running much better than we had worried.
The electricity from the nearby solar power facility and the nuclear plant was enough for complete self-sufficiency, and they even had emergency power-nothing was lacking.
But electricity alone couldn't solve everything.
That's why-
"Thank you so much for coming all this way."
It didn't take long for the nuclear power plant director to bow deeply to Kim Gun with genuine gratitude.
"If it weren't for you, we would've all starved to death."
"If there's anything you need, let us know. We'll supply you with whatever you want."
Maybe because he'd done something similar back in Ulsan, Kim Gun continued the conversation smoothly.
gave him an order.
[Ask to be taken to where the spent nuclear fuel is stored.]
One of the main reasons nuclear plants are dangerous is because of the spent fuel. It's stored in pools, but it's practically a radioactive bomb.
Difficult waste that requires constant management.
"If I'm lucky, I can dispose of it."
If I used the black energy to incinerate it, I could eliminate it all.
The problem was that, since we couldn't designate the Kori Nuclear Plant as an outpost, we'd have to find another method.
Complete use of the black energy was only possible within the domain, so to dispose of the spent fuel, we first had to bring it inside the domain.
So I was thinking of using a storage facility to move them one by one and take care of them that way.
"If only we could make this place an outpost, things would go so much smoother."
If we just had a mid-level vampire settled here, like the one at the Homeplus in Ulsan, it would be enough.
"Maybe if we lured a monster in and then wiped it out, we could make it work?"
And then-
"Hm?"
Through the eyes of the Absolute, he spotted something strange.
"You won't believe it, Director. The newbie took down dozens of goblins all by himself!"
"Seriously?"
"I mean, haha..."
A mid-level vampire, wearing a fake smile, was standing right there.
