The wind howled as Eleanor stumbled through the fog, branches clawing at her skin, the cold seeping into her bones. Shadows moved at the edges of her vision, faces flickering in the mist, eyes hollow and mournful. The voices followed her, whispering her name, echoing through the darkness.
"Come home, Eleanor… come home…"
She ran faster, feet sinking into the mud, breath hitching in her throat. Her heart thundered, pulse racing, fear curling in her chest. The trees loomed above her, branches twisted and gnarled, reaching for her with skeletal fingers. The shadows danced among them, faces shifting, mouths moving in silent whispers.
Eleanor could feel them watching her, their eyes following her every move, their voices brushing against her skin. Cold hands tangled in her hair, fingers curling around her wrists, tugging her deeper into the woods. She could feel their pain, their longing, their emptiness. They were trapped… just like her.
Her mother's voice echoed through the trees, soft and broken. "I'm so sorry… so sorry…"
Eleanor's chest tightened, tears stinging her eyes. She didn't understand… didn't know how to fight something that wasn't even real. The Echo was a memory, a promise, a curse that bound her to the village, to the land, to the shadows. She could feel it pulling her closer, drawing her deeper, its melody curling around her, hollow and haunting.
The trees swayed in the wind, their branches creaking, shadows shifting in the darkness. The path twisted beneath her feet, mud sucking at her boots, roots curling around her ankles. Eleanor stumbled, hands scraping against the earth, fingers digging into the dirt. The cold seeped into her skin, numbing her bones, shadows swirling around her.
She could hear the voices now, clearer than before. They called to her, mournful and hollow, their words curling around her like smoke.
"Eleanor… Eleanor…"
She looked up, vision blurred, the fog swirling around her. The shadows moved closer, faces forming in the mist, eyes empty and hollow. They reached for her, fingers brushing her skin, cold and brittle, mouths moving in silent whispers.
"Remember us… remember…"
Eleanor's heart stopped, breath catching in her throat. She knew those faces… recognized those eyes. They were the sacrificed… the forgotten… the erased. The ones who had been taken by The Echo, lost to memory, their lives stolen, their souls trapped.
She could feel their pain, their longing, their emptiness. It wrapped around her, cold and heavy, pressing against her chest, sinking into her bones. They were fragments… just like her.
A cold breeze swept through the woods, rustling the branches, shadows curling around her. The faces watched her, eyes hollow, mouths moving in unison. Their voices echoed through the trees, mournful and broken.
"Come home, Eleanor… come home…"
She staggered to her feet, body trembling, fear twisting in her gut. She had to get out… had to escape. But the shadows moved with her, faces following her, hands reaching for her. She could feel them pulling her closer, drawing her deeper into the woods.
The melody grew louder, haunting and hollow, curling around her, sinking into her skin. Eleanor's heart raced, pulse pounding in her ears, body trembling. The darkness pressed closer, shadows swallowing the light, faces flickering in the mist.
She turned, feet slipping on the mud, legs carrying her deeper into the woods. The trees grew taller, branches twisted and gnarled, shadows crawling along their trunks. The fog grew thicker, the air colder, the voices louder.
"Remember… remember…"
Eleanor's chest tightened, breath coming in gasps. She stumbled over a root, hands scraping against the earth, fingers digging into the dirt. The cold seeped into her bones, shadows curling around her, faces watching from the darkness.
She looked up, vision blurred, eyes wide. There, standing among the trees, was her mother. Her hair was tangled, dress tattered, eyes hollow and empty. Her face was pale, lips moving in silent whispers, hands reaching for Eleanor.
Eleanor's breath hitched, tears slipping down her cheeks. "Mom?" Her voice trembled, body shaking. "Mom… is that you?"
Her mother's face twisted, sorrow flickering in her eyes. "I'm so sorry… so sorry…" Her voice was hollow, broken, echoing through the woods. "I couldn't save you… couldn't protect you…"
Eleanor's chest ached, tears burning her eyes. She took a step closer, hands reaching for her mother, fingers trembling. "No… no, you did save me. You gave your life to protect me." Her voice cracked, pain lacing her words. "You kept me safe… all this time."
Her mother's face crumpled, eyes darkening, shadows curling around her. "I only delayed the inevitable… only made it worse. You're trapped, Eleanor… trapped because of me."
The words hung heavy in the air, the shadows pressing closer, faces watching from the darkness. Eleanor's body went cold, heart sinking, fear curling in her chest. "No… that's not true. I… I can break the cycle. I can end this."
Her mother shook her head, sorrow twisting her features. "You can't escape your destiny. You were meant to be the sacrifice… meant to be taken. That's why The Echo calls to you… why you hear the voices." Her eyes darkened, shadows swirling around her. "You're already part of it… part of the curse. There's no way out."
Eleanor's knees buckled, body sinking to the ground, hands curling in the dirt. The shadows pressed closer, faces flickering in the fog, voices whispering her name. "Come home, Eleanor… come home…"
Her mother's face began to fade, her body growing transparent, shadows curling around her. "I'm so sorry… so sorry…" Her voice grew faint, hollow and broken, echoing through the woods. "I never wanted this for you… never wanted you to suffer. But I couldn't save you… couldn't change your fate."
Eleanor's chest tightened, tears slipping down her cheeks, body trembling. "Mom… don't go… please don't leave me." Her voice cracked, pain lacing her words. "I need you… I need you to help me."
But her mother was already gone, her body fading into the mist, voice echoing through the trees. "I'm so sorry… so sorry…"
Eleanor sank to the ground, tears soaking the earth, shadows curling around her. The faces watched her, eyes hollow, mouths moving in silent whispers. The melody echoed through the woods, haunting and hollow, curling around her, sinking into her skin.
She was trapped… just like them.
The fog closed in, cold and heavy, shadows swallowing the light. The faces moved closer, their hands reaching for her, voices whispering her name. Eleanor closed her eyes, her mother's voice echoing through her mind.
"Come home, Eleanor… come home…"
