As Vale steadied himself, the forest seemed to fall silent. The faint rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze and the dappled sunlight breaking through the canopy were his only companions. He was still piecing his thoughts together when he caught sight of a familiar figure in the clearing ahead.
The mysterious woman stood there, quietly watching him. Her staff gave off a faint, steady glow, and while her hood still shadowed her face, Vale could make out a thoughtful expression in her eyes.
"You…" Vale started, but his voice trailed off. He hadn't expected to see her again, let alone at this moment.
"I've been watching you," she said, her voice calm and steady.
Vale frowned slightly. "Watching me? Why didn't you help?"
"Because this is your fight," she replied without hesitation. "If I step in and handle everything for you, you'll never truly grow, nor will you ever be ready for the challenges that lie ahead."
Her words hung in the air, and for a moment Vale was silent. He thought back to the battle he had just fought, the danger he had faced alone. Every swing of his sword, every split-second decision, had been his own. Perhaps she was right. Still, he felt a complicated mix of emotions at her revelation.
"You could've at least told me why," he said, his tone more subdued now, though still tinged with confusion.
"Some truths have to be experienced to be understood," she answered, her calm voice carrying a weight that seemed to reach straight into his chest.
Vale glanced down at his blade. He understood her reasoning, though it didn't fully satisfy him. He lifted his gaze to meet hers. "What happens now? Why appear now, after everything?"
She allowed a faint smile, as if she'd just laid down a burden she had carried for a long time. "Because your path is set in motion. I came to see if you were ready."
"To see if I'm ready?" he echoed, uncertain what she meant.
She nodded, her tone lightening ever so slightly. "Yes. Your journey has begun, and my role is finished."
The realization hit him hard. "You're leaving?"
"Yes." Her voice softened as she turned away and took a few steps toward the forest. "From here on, you'll have to walk this road on your own. Remember, the abyss never truly rests, it's always watching. Stay resolute, and you'll find the answers you're seeking."
He stood motionless, watching her go. The air around him felt heavier, the prospect of continuing alone sinking in. Yet at the same time, a flicker of determination sparked within him. Her guidance might be ending, but he had learned enough to carry on.
"Thank you," he called out, his voice low but sincere.
The woman paused briefly, her steps halting for just a moment. Then, without turning back, she continued on until her figure disappeared into the mist, leaving Vale alone once more.
Silence returned to the forest. Vale drew a steady breath, his grip tightening around his sword. The path ahead was unknown, but he felt more prepared than ever. Adjusting his pack, he turned toward the trail and pressed on, each step more resolute than the last.
