As dawn broke, the rain finally ceased. Outside, the cheerful chirping of birds filled the air, seemingly driving away the gloom of the previous night. Vale slowly awoke, greeted by a pleasant aroma drifting through the air. Nearby, Marcus was busy preparing breakfast by the fire, while Delilah tenderly cared for the little girl. Lucas, meanwhile, scurried around like a mischievous monkey, his leg seemingly uninjured.
Suddenly, Marcus called out,
"Breakfast time!"
No sooner had he spoken than Lucas snatched a piece of bread and devoured it in a flash, only to choke and sputter. Vale could only watch in exasperation as Lucas flailed comically.
Marcus then handed a piece of bread and a cup of milk to Delilah. While Delilah was halfway through her breakfast, the little girl stirred and slowly opened her eyes. With an eerily calm expression, she looked at Delilah and said softly,
"You shouldn't have saved me."
The words, cold and emotionless, struck Delilah hard. Without hesitating, she delivered a sharp slap, exclaiming,
"You clueless fool! How can you not value your own life? Life is a miracle pieced together by countless accidents, and you treat it so lightly, it's infuriating!"
Fuming, she stormed out of the cave.
Lucas, seeing no reaction from the girl, panicked and rushed over to check on her. Fortunately, she was only dazed, lost in thought about Delilah's harsh words, soon breaking into tears, one drop after another. Marcus looked on with deep sorrow, unsure how to comfort her. Lucas, stunned by the sight, then, like a magician, produced a slice of bread smeared with honey from behind him. Noticing that the girl was still crying, he began making goofy faces to cheer her up.
Just then, Delilah, hearing the crying, returned from the cave entrance and roughly grabbed Lucas, hurling him aside.
"You violent woman!" Lucas retorted angrily,
"Get off me! You're scaring the little sister!"
As his hand reached out toward the girl, a mysterious glow suddenly enveloped her, forming a protective barrier around her and Delilah. Lucas's hand, upon touching the shimmering shield, was flung away once more.
The little girl clung tightly to Delilah, for it was the first time she had ever felt genuine warmth. Delilah gently patted the girl's back, softly assuring,
"You're safe now, no one here will hurt you again."
The girl cried even harder, her tears falling steadily, while Marcus looked on, helplessly heartbroken.
In that fragile moment, the atmosphere shifted from tension to a weary sense of relief. Despite the pain of their recent ordeal, the team understood that their brief respite was precious.
Marcus stepped forward with quiet authority,
"Come on, everyone, let's all go have breakfast."
With no reason to argue, the others nodded and began to settle down.
