"Dashiell had grown accustomed to it. Every night since leaving Sister, I'd been plagued by nightmares."
He raised his head again, his eyes misted over, his lips glistening where he'd bitten them.
Hooking his arms around Serenity's neck, he deliberately brushed against her chest.
"Only when I sleep next to Sister can I get a peaceful night's rest."
Serenity lovingly stroked Dashiell's hair, over and over.
"It's my fault for letting you get scared again. That beast has already been dealt with..."
Dashiell suddenly remembered something, anxiously interrupting Serenity: "You promised to let Garrett out once I woke up! How long have I been asleep? Is Garrett angry?"
He tried to struggle out of bed, breathing heavily in his weakened state.
"I need to go apologize to Garrett!"
Apologize?
At this moment, I had already become a ghost, floating beside them.
That Chihuahua's mother died when it was born. I raised it with a syringe.
After ten whole years of care, Serenity crushed its neck with one step. Meanwhile, I was being torn apart and devoured by two massive Tibetan Mastiffs, with blood and shreds of flesh scattered all over the ground.
I wonder how Serenity would react when she sees this?
But at that moment, she only sympathetically pulled Dashiell into her embrace once again.
"Dashiell, you're just too naive and kind-hearted. Garrett knew full well about your heart condition. I went through so much trouble to find you a suitable heart, and at such a crucial time just days before the surgery, he actually brought his dog to scare you!"
"I was also careless! I should have dealt with that beast long before you moved in! This time, I'll make sure Garrett learns his lesson!"
A sharp pain shot through my chest, making it almost impossible to breathe.
Serenity kept calling it a beast, but she clearly knew how much that Chihuahua meant to me.
As soon as I was locked in the basement, I knew someone would end up dead. I begged and pleaded with her to let me out.
But Serenity, right in front of me, loudly instructed the butler:
"Don't let anyone open the door for him! Otherwise, I won't hesitate to let you all experience my, Serenity's, cruelty!"
To survive, I ignored the metal shards cutting my hands bloody and forcibly dismantled the basement's ventilation shaft. I almost made it! Just a little more and I would've succeeded!
Serenity, seeing me desperately trying to escape, flew into a rage.
She decided I was refusing to bow my head and admit my mistake.
She ordered the butler to tie up my hands and feet with rope, and they tossed me back into the basement like a hog for slaughter.
I watched in terror as the Tibetan mastiff lunged at me, and I couldn't even shield my face.
I helplessly watched as I was devoured, and then I stopped breathing.
Serenity wrapped one arm around Dashiell's waist, while holding a cup of warm milk in the other hand, thoughtfully blowing on it to cool it down.
"You must be hungry. What would you like to eat?"
Dashiell sipped the milk in small gulps and said timidly:
"The doctor said nourishing foods are best for my current constitution, and recommended I eat more animal hearts..."
"That's perfect then. That beast scared you, so its heart would surely be the most effective for your recovery! Let Garrett out, he'll know best how to cook his dog to make it the most delicious."
"But... that dog seemed very important to Brother Garrett... Will Brother Garrett agree?"
Dashiell said with an innocent look on his face.
