"Whore who slept her way to the top!"
Scarlett smashed the TV to pieces and stormed off.
Perhaps everyone believed the Sterling family was Evelina's backing.
How else could one explain how Evelina, an illegitimate daughter, managed to escape danger time and again under Scarlett's nose?
My body ached.
Every breath was agony.
Still, I forced a smile.
Indeed.
No one could have guessed it was someone as vain, vulgar, and insignificant as me who repeatedly risked my life to warn Evelina.
Everyone thought I was just a calculating orphan.
In their eyes, I shamelessly wormed my way into the Harrington family by exploiting my friendship with Evelina from the orphanage.
Then I quickly abandoned her, constantly clinging to Scarlett's side.
Scenes flashed before my eyes like a zoetrope.
I still remembered overhearing that sentence years ago outside the Harrington family study: "That bastard, if she's got the nerve to enter the Harrington family, she shouldn't expect to leave unscathed."
From Scarlett.
So I began to ingratiate myself with her.
I constantly targeted Evelina in front of Scarlett, and eventually beat her to the punch by kidnapping her.
She was beaten black and blue by the men I hired.
Although I knew the thugs would only inflict superficial wounds as I had instructed beforehand.
I still felt heartbroken.
"How could you become like this!"
Faced with Evelina's questioning, I rolled my eyes and said, "Evelina, you never belonged to the Harrington family. How dare you try to compete with Miss Harrington!"
Scarlett listened with satisfaction behind me.
Evelina lay on the ground, looking up at me.
The hatred in her eyes pierced my heart.
Later, everything went according to plan. Evelina broke free from her bonds.
During her escape, I timed it perfectly and, disguised as a stranger, took a fatal stab for her.
Evelina spent half a year in the hospital, while I left the Harrington family for a year under the pretext of searching for my birth parents.
Scarlett completely believed in me.
Evelina also severed all ties with me for good.
I feel a chill in my body, unable to muster even a shred of strength.
But...
I still wanted to see her one last time.
It was this ridiculous goal that gave me strength.
I struggled to stand up using the wall for support, feeling dizzy and lightheaded.
Carefully avoiding the people Scarlett sent to watch me, I climbed over the wall and fell onto the cold ground.
After who knew how long, I finally managed to get up.
Another unknown amount of time passed.
I practically crawled onto the main street.
"Evelina, help me..."
My vision went dark, and I finally lost consciousness, completely blacking out.
In my haze, I thought I see Evelina.
"Ethan, don't fall asleep!"
She hurriedly carried me into the hospital.
It was just like when we were back at the orphanage.
I felt safe, nuzzling against her chest, listening to her heart beating anxiously for me.
I blinked.
When I woke up again.
I was lying in a private hospital room, smelling the scent of disinfectant, with no one by my side.
It was just a dream after all.
Someone pushed open the door and came in, claiming to be my lifesaver.
Before I could thank her.
The strange woman looked me up and down, smirking:
"You must've really done a number on yourself in bed, huh."
