It was a crisp autumn morning when Jeff's phone buzzed with an unfamiliar number. He ignored it at first, too busy reviewing reports from his growing software team. But when the number called again, something made him pick up.
"Hello?"
There was a pause on the other end, and then a voice he hadn't heard in years.
"Jeff… it's me. Evelyn."
Jeff's grip on the phone tightened. For a moment, he couldn't speak, the sound of her voice dredging up emotions he'd worked so hard to bury.
"What do you want?" he said finally, his tone colder than he intended.
"I need to see you," Evelyn said, her voice trembling. "Please, Jeff. It's important."
Jeff agreed to meet her that evening at a quiet café downtown. When she walked in, he barely recognized her. The confident, ambitious woman he had once loved was now a shadow of her former self. Her hair was tied back in a simple ponytail, and dark circles framed her eyes.
"Thanks for coming," she said, sitting across from him.
Jeff folded his arms. "Why now, Evelyn? It's been years."
She hesitated, looking down at her coffee. "I made a mistake," she said softly. "Leaving you… choosing Ryan… it was all a mistake."
Jeff's chest tightened. "And you expect me to just… what? Forget everything? Welcome you back like nothing happened?"
"No," she said quickly. "I don't expect anything. I just… I needed to tell you. Ryan wasn't who I thought he was. He… he used me, Jeff. Betrayed me in ways I can't even begin to explain."
Jeff leaned back, his mind reeling. A part of him wanted to feel vindicated, to revel in her regret. But seeing her like this, so broken, only filled him with a deep, conflicting sorrow.
"Why are you really here, Evelyn?" he asked.
"I don't know," she admitted, tears brimming in her eyes. "I guess I was hoping… maybe we could find a way back to what we had. Or at least talk."
The next few weeks were a whirlwind of mixed emotions for Jeff. Against his better judgment, he allowed Evelyn back into his life—tentatively at first, meeting for coffee or dinner to talk about the years they had spent apart. She told him about her life with Ryan: the initial glamour, the slow erosion of trust, and the ultimate betrayal that left her financially and emotionally shattered.
Jeff shared his own story, though he left out the darker moments of his despair. He told her about Richard, his growing company, and the success he had built from the ground up.
"I'm proud of you," Evelyn said one evening as they walked through a quiet park. "You've accomplished so much. I always knew you would."
Her words stirred something in Jeff, a flicker of the love he had once felt for her. But they also ignited a spark of doubt. Could he ever truly forgive her? Could he trust her again?
As the weeks turned into months, their relationship deepened. Jeff found himself falling for her all over again, despite the nagging voice in the back of his mind warning him to be careful. Evelyn seemed genuinely remorseful, and her presence brought a sense of warmth and familiarity that Jeff hadn't realized he'd been missing.
One evening, as they sat on his couch watching an old movie they used to love, Jeff turned to her.
"I want to try again," he said, his voice steady. "But if we're going to do this, it has to be all or nothing. No more secrets, no more half-truths. Can you promise me that?"
Evelyn nodded, tears glistening in her eyes. "I promise, Jeff. I'll never hurt you again."
For a while, things seemed almost perfect. They began making plans for the future, talking about traveling, moving to a bigger place, even starting a family someday. Jeff felt a cautious optimism growing in his heart.
But beneath the surface, a storm was brewing. No matter how much he wanted to believe in their fresh start, Jeff couldn't shake the memories of Evelyn's betrayal. Late at night, as she slept beside him, he would lie awake, replaying the moment she had walked out of their apartment to be with Ryan.
The doubts festered, growing into something darker. And though he didn't want to admit it, a part of him still craved retribution.
