Mr Steve came over our home and offered to help us,my mom was hesitant because she knew that Steve was married and had alot of responsibilities in his own home of which it would be unfair for her to add on his costs but we managed to convince her and she finally agreed.
I personally believe that she agreed because of us,knowing my mom she could have still disagreed but just because she knew that we were starving and already causing a distraction to our academics she couldn't risk it for us.she knew that Steve was our only hope at that point .steve had expressed himself that it's would be a betrayal to his friend if he didn't help out,our father would have done the same if he was in the same situation. All he wanted to do was to pay tribute to his dear friend. The words made her feel better but I could still see that she felt shy and a bit uncomfortable even though she had agreed for Steve to help out.To my mom it's was a big deal,to her it's was not just about buying groceries but allowing a men in to our safe space, she knew that after this incident we would feel more comfortable around Steve more than we should.she also knew that it's would be difficult for her to set boundaries because it would seem like she wasn't greatful for the help and support from Steve.
'only this time Steve'she said.me and my older sister went with Steve to buy our essentials at the nearest supermarket.Mr Steve bought alot of things which we were in need of he bought food and cosmetics and he even handed us some money to cover any thing he might have not bought ,we were greatful and expressed our gratitude to him.he indeed helped us alot and it's lasted us for a while.
That night we were very happy,we managed to eat pizza which we had not eaten for a long time,we had juice ,we had fruits, cake everything. It was all giggling for us.you would swear we were soldiers coming from war,we were grabbing this, swallowing that, drinking this, tasting everything.we imagined how it's could be like living in Steve house with all the money he has,for sure they had everything.
'wait a minute, where is mom 'i said while I went to look for her.'There you are'.she was in the kitchen cleaning the fridge,'mom come and eat' I persuaded her.'no I'm fine my dear, after all someone has to clean the fridge since we have food now'she explained.doubtful,I nodded and went back to eat.I did not want to put more pressure after all the food was finally here and she could eat whenever she wanted.
Things were fine those couple of weeks in to the following month, but as the days passed we knew that we will soon be faced with the same problem.since most of our needs were sorted mom tried to push with my sister's school fees and we were really relieved.my mother's money was able to solve other issues which were left hanging because of our lack of sufficient income but now that Steve had sorted out the groceries we were filling up the missing puzzles just so that we could balance up by the time the groceries would be over.
God had answered our prayers and we were greatful,we started picking up at school and the teachers we relieved, some of my classmates were disappointed since I was taking back my spot in the top five.I also started learning how to sew and I made a few dresses. The idea was for us to buy the materials and start a business whereby we would sew for people or sell already made dresses.Any thing the people suggested we were willing to try it,for both business and learning purposes.
We were all in ,making garments and trying to convince the people of our community to support us.Luckily for us the second term had pass and it's was schools break which meant more events such as parties and weddings.we were able to sell most of the stuff and by the time the things that Steve had bought finished we were already selling.
I was happy to finally see our work paying off, people wearing my designs, buying all different type of materials we made.i was greatful for the support from the people of our community even though I knew that they supported us mostly because we were cheaper, but I was greatful for the opportunity because it's was a sign that I'm not delusional,my dreams could be a reality and my things are indeed useful. At first I was scared that people would not want to take a chance on us or let alone wear my things but everything was a success.
The business kept us very busy the whole spring break.its sustained us enough to finish my sister's first year tuition fee.we celebrated our victory, since it was a big deal to us.An obstacle I might as well say.
When ever I would go to deliver the garments I would see Steve along the road since his home was next to our home and he would normally greet me and applaud us for the great work.He encouraged me,he believed in me,he was kind,he was supportive.steve saw my capabilities and he was not afraid to stand up for me,sometimes he would order somethings for his family, his wife loved my designs since they were stylish,it's was nothing compared to what was in the market which is why Steve would normally give me a tip.i admired him .he encouraged me alot.after all Steve was also stylish ,fashion was in his blood hence he related to my desires.
