At this moment, my phone rang, and I heard the voice of the children's school teacher:
"Serenity and Harmony's dad, school is over an hour early today. I've sent Serenity and Harmony up in the elevator to your office. Could you please meet them at the elevator?"
I glanced at Vivienne and Fintan's backs, feeling a sense of dread. I quickly responded:
"Thank you, teacher. I understand."
I jogged hurriedly, spotting from afar that Vivienne and Fintan stood by the elevator.
Vivienne was leaning close to Fintan, her hand raised as if adjusting something on his shirt collar.
The pose looked rather intimate.
Just then, the elevator doors slowly opened.
As they parted, Serenity and Harmony were inside, hand in hand, grinning as they prepared to step out.
But when they looked up and saw the two people at the elevator entrance, they froze in their tracks.
Witnessing this scene, my heart raced with anxiety.
I rushed into the elevator, positioning myself in front of the children, trying to block their view.
Serenity and Harmony's attention was drawn to me, and they both looked my way, calling out in unison: "Dad...". Vivienne noticed the children, her eyes flickering momentarily. She quickly withdrew her hand, which had paused mid-air, and put on the facade of a stranger.
Fintan didn't notice anything amiss and smiled as he took Vivienne's hand.
"Vivienne, the elevator's here. Let's go."
I silently led the two children out of the elevator, one on each side.
For a split second as we entered and exited, the scene seemed frozen in time.
Serenity gazed at Vivienne, her eyes filled with longing, and whispered softly, "Mommy..."
I halted my steps, feeling a sharp pain in my heart.
I looked down at the two children and saw Harmony biting her lip as she looked up at me and asked:
"Daddy, is that the man Auntie likes?"
Harmony's expression was deeply saddened.
My heart ached to see it, but I could only nod with teary eyes.
I took the two children to my workstation to pack up, but my thoughts drifted away involuntarily.
Four years ago, the two children had begged for a long time before Vivienne agreed to take them to the amusement park.
At the amusement park, Serenity and Harmony were waiting in line for a ride. Serenity saw the glowing balloons, her face filled with longing. Without thinking, she turned to Vivienne and said, "Mom..."
Vivienne's brow immediately furrowed.
"How many times have I told you not to call me 'Mom' in public!"
She turned and walked away.
Harmony anxiously chased after her, stumbling after a couple of steps and falling to the ground. Lying there, she reached out to Vivienne, crying:
"Mom, Mom... Please don't leave us..."
The crowd was too thick, and Vivienne quickly disappeared from sight.
Harmony lay on the ground, wailing loudly.
Serenity crouched beside Harmony, joining in the loud crying.
From that day on, Harmony not only learned to call her "Auntie," but also became quiet and withdrawn.
