Chapter 2

However, my words had barely fallen when my mother-in-law's face showed clear disagreement.

She took my hand affectionately and spoke.

"Serenity, give Alec a little more time."

"He will regain his memory."

"Trust Mom, I've been through this. Alec, he loves you."

Alec loves me?

Three years, three weddings, and he lost his memory at each one.

This time, how long would it take for him to remember me?

I was truly exhausted.

Moreover... my parents were dead!

Back then, I agreed to take care of the ailing Alec for my mother-in-law, to make him fall in love with me.

To seduce him and successfully bear the first grandson of Shaw Manor, all for my parents to have a better life.

Now my parents were gone!

What meaning did any of this have anymore?

I pulled my hand away from my mother-in-law's grip, tears streaming down my cheeks.

"My parents are dead!"

"There's no chance for Alec and me anymore!"

But my mother-in-law wiped away my tears and suddenly made a solemn promise.

"Serenity, don't worry, I'll get you a professional lawyer."

"Scarlett will receive the punishment she deserves."

"As for you leaving Alec, can we discuss that after the lawsuit is settled?"

Mother-in-law took out her phone.

I saw the contact information for the most authoritative criminal lawyer in New York City.

"Serenity, if you just agree with mom, I'll contact Counselor Harrington for you right away."

Mother-in-law coaxed in a low voice.

My fingers dug into my palms, my heart shattering into pieces.

"Okay......"

As long as Scarlett can be punished......

I said silently in my heart, but tears soaked the white sheets.

Mother-in-law smiled and turned to leave the hospital room.

After she left, ignoring the pain in my body, I immediately took a taxi to the police station where my parents' bodies were being held.

In the cold morgue, my parents lay mangled and bloody.

I hugged their only intact heads and cried my heart out.

At that moment, a strange sound came from one of the morgue's cabinets.

"Brother Alec......"

A familiar voice exploded in my ears.

I widened my eyes in disbelief, feeling nauseous, but heard the familiar male voice again.

"Does it feel good?"

It was Alec's voice!

Three years of intimate care, day and night. The whispers and caresses in bed. The sweet nothings shared in moments of deep passion.

I couldn't have misheard.

That was undoubtedly Alec's voice...

A familiar dull ache seized my heart, nearly taking my breath away.

They... were actually doing this in my parents' morgue?!

In an instant, my entire body went rigid, as if encased in ice.

Their uninhibited sounds grew louder in my ears, leaving my mind blank.

After a minute, I snapped back to reality, my trembling hands fumbling for my phone to hit the record button.

As if to torture myself, I knelt on the floor, crawling step by step towards the cabinet.

The voices of the man and woman became even clearer.

My heart throbbed with pain, tears streaming down my entire face.

Alec, this time I was truly exhausted.

I couldn't wait for you to recover your memories anymore.

I recorded for half an hour.

I was forced to listen to them going at it for half an hour.

Until their voices finally ceased, and the cabinet door was about to open.

I scrambled to my feet and fled in panic.

I ran all the way to the police station entrance, where I covered my mouth and vomited uncontrollably.

"Urgh..."

As if emptying my stomach could somehow cleanse my soul.

I retched until I was dizzy, finally collapsing in a heap on the ground.

Just then, my phone rang.

It was my mother-in-law calling.

"Serenity, come home right away!"

"The lawyer I found for you, Mr. Harrington, is here at the house. Come meet her."
