The next morning, Elias left early for work, determined to prove himself in his new role. It was a big step for him, and he wanted to do everything right.
Lani watched as he kissed her goodbye before heading out the door. She was proud of him, but she couldn't ignore the small feeling of unease in her chest.
Would this job take him away from them more than she expected?

Later that afternoon, Lani picked up Lily and Luca from school. She noticed Lily was unusually quiet, her little face set in a frown.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?" Lani asked as she drove.
Lily crossed her arms, staring out the window. "Daddy's too busy for me now."
Lani's heart clenched. "Oh, baby, that's not true. Daddy's just working hard so we can have everything we need."
"I don't care!" Lily suddenly shouted, her voice full of frustration. "I don't want a busy daddy! I want my daddy back!"
Luca sighed. "Lily, stop acting like a baby."
"I'm NOT a baby!" she screamed, kicking the seat in front of her.
"Lily!" Lani scolded. "That's enough."
But Lily was too upset. Tears welled in her eyes, and she started kicking and crying harder.
"I HATE Daddy's new job! I HATE it!" she wailed. "He doesn't love us anymore!"
Lani quickly pulled the car over and turned to her daughter.
"Lily, listen to me," she said firmly but gently. "Daddy loves you so much. That will never change."
Lily sniffled, her tiny body trembling. "Then why isn't he here?"
Lani sighed, brushing her fingers through Lily's hair. "Because he's trying to be the best daddy he can be. He's doing this for you."
Lily pouted, still upset, but the fight in her was fading.
Luca rolled his eyes. "She's so dramatic."
Lani shot him a look. "Luca, she's just expressing her feelings. Let her be."
Luca huffed but stayed quiet.
Lani turned back to Lily. "Tell you what, how about we talk to Daddy tonight? I'm sure he'll make time for you, okay?"
Lily wiped her eyes. "Promise?"
"I promise."
Lily nodded slowly, calming down.
Lani sighed in relief, but deep down, she knew they needed to fix this before it got worse.
Would Elias see it the same way?
