The tremor intensified, the cavern groaning and shuddering around them like a wounded beast. Chunks of rock and dust rained down from the ceiling, forcing Ling Chen and Zhan Yi to shield their faces as they scrambled towards the newly revealed passageway.
"Hurry!" Ling Chen shouted, his voice barely audible above the din. He could feel the pressure building in the cavern, the sense of impending collapse growing stronger with each passing moment. They needed to get out of here, and they needed to do it now.
Zhan Yi, as always, was a step ahead. He moved with a speed and precision that defied the treacherous terrain, clearing a path through the falling debris and guiding Ling Chen towards the opening. His face was an impassive mask, but his grip on Ling Chen's hand was firm and reassuring, a silent promise of protection in the face of overwhelming danger.
The entrance to the passage was narrow, barely wide enough for them to squeeze through. Zhan Yi hesitated for a moment, scanning the surrounding area for any sign of the pursuing monsters. "Go first," he ordered, his voice a low growl that barely registered above the roaring rumble of the collapsing cavern.
Ling Chen didn't argue. He knew that Zhan Yi was simply assessing the situation, calculating the risks, preparing to defend their escape. He trusted the Tyrant's judgment, his instincts honed by years of combat and a lifetime spent on the battlefield.
He squeezed through the narrow opening, his body scraping against the rough stone walls. The passageway was dark and cramped, forcing him to hunch over as he moved forward. The air was thick with the smell of damp earth and something else… something ancient and unsettling that made his stomach churn.
"Are we safe now?" a small voice piped up from somewhere behind him. It was his sentient silk boxers, their fabric trembling nervously. "Is there any chance of finding a decent laundry service in this… this subterranean hellhole?"
Ling Chen rolled his eyes, suppressing a sigh. Even in the face of imminent doom, his underwear could always be counted on for a dose of unsolicited commentary.
"Silence, Underwear," Zhan Yi said, his voice echoing down the passage. "Focus on staying intact."
The underwear, apparently sensing the Tyrant's disapproval, fell silent, its fabric quivering with a mixture of fear and indignation. Ling Chen couldn't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for the sentient boxers.
They might be annoying, but they were also undeniably loyal, and they had, on more than one occasion, proven to be surprisingly helpful.
Zhan Yi squeezed through the narrow opening, his broad shoulders brushing against the rough stone walls. He moved with a surprising grace and agility, his movements fluid and precise despite the cramped conditions. He scanned the passageway ahead, his eyes narrowed, his senses alert.
"The passage is unstable," Zhan Yi said, his voice a low rumble. "The ceiling is about to collapse."
Ling Chen's heart sank. It seemed their escape route was just as treacherous as the cavern they had left behind. They were trapped between a rock and a hard place, facing imminent doom from both behind and before.
"Any suggestions?" Ling Chen asked, his voice laced with a mixture of fear and desperation.
Zhan Yi hesitated for a moment, his gaze sweeping over the passageway ahead. "We continue forward," he said, his voice firm. "It is the only option."
He grabbed Ling Chen's hand again, his grip tightening. "Stay close," he ordered. "And be prepared for anything."
And then they moved forward.
The passageway twisted and turned, leading them deeper into the earth. The air grew colder, the darkness more profound, and the silence more oppressive. Ling Chen could feel the weight of the mountain above them, pressing down on him, threatening to crush him beneath its immense weight.
He could also sense the presence of something else… something ancient and powerful that resonated deep within the very core of the earth. It was a familiar presence, one that he had sensed before in the collapsing cavern. But here, in the claustrophobic confines of the passageway, it was amplified, intensified, filling him with a sense of both awe and dread.
"What is that" muttered the underwear. The more it saw it more it felt as if something terrible was about to happen. The vision was a blur, however he didn't want them to die here at least.
Suddenly, the passageway opened into a small chamber, its walls lined with strange, glowing crystals that illuminated the space with an ethereal, otherworldly light. The crystals pulsed with a soft, rhythmic energy, casting dancing shadows that seemed to writhe and twist like living things.
Ling Chen stared at the crystals, mesmerized by their beauty and unnerved by their unsettling energy. He had never seen anything like them before. They seemed to hum with a power that was both alluring and dangerous. His instincts screamed at him to stay away.
He did not know what they were. There had to be a reason. This was getting more and more excited and thrilling.
"What are those?" Zhan Yi asked, his voice a low murmur that barely broke the silence of the chamber. He stepped forward cautiously, his hand gripping the hilt of his sword, his gaze fixed on the glowing crystals. Zhan Yi is always cautious at things. And these times make his image to go up! There's something so exciting that I can't stop watching.
Ling Chen reached out with his Sensory Resonance, probing the crystals, trying to decipher their secrets. He felt a surge of energy wash over him, a flood of information that threatened to overwhelm his senses.
The crystals were ancient, powerful, and deeply connected to the very fabric of the earth. They were also… alive.
"They're… amplifying something," Ling Chen said, his voice strained with the effort of concentration. "I can't tell what, but they're making it stronger, more intense."
As if on cue, a low, guttural growl echoed through the chamber, followed by the skittering of claws on the cavern floor. The monsters were back, and they were closer than ever.
"They're coming!" the underwear shouted, its fabric fluttering frantically. "And they're not alone! I sense… reinforcements! Big, nasty reinforcements with really, really sharp teeth!"
Zhan Yi's eyes narrowed, his posture shifting into a defensive stance. He moved to shield Ling Chen from the approaching danger, his body a solid barrier against the darkness.
"Let's end this"
"Not yet," Ling Chen said, his voice a strained whisper. "I think… I think I know what's amplifying their power."
He pointed towards the glowing crystals, his hand trembling slightly. "It's those crystals. They're feeding the monsters, making them stronger, more aggressive."
"Then we will be destroying this one" And with those words, all the monsters have rushed directly to their locations. It was as if they were running for their purposes to do something, to live. What were they?
Zhan Yi nodded, his expression resolute. "Then destroy we must. I will take care of them"
He charged towards the crystals, his sword raised high, preparing to strike a decisive blow. But just as he was about to swing, a figure emerged from the shadows, blocking his path.
It was Hua Lian.
His face was pale, his eyes haunted, and his clothes were in tatters, as if he had been through a terrible battle. He was alive.
But something was different.
He was holding it to his side.
"Hua Lian" said Ling Chen. He couldn't understand. What the hell was he fighting for. What are they really planning.
Zhan Yi is frozen.
"I'm sorry, Master Ling Chen," Hua Lian said, his voice barely a whisper. "I didn't want it to come to this. But I had no choice. They forced me."
Before Ling Chen could respond, Hua Lian raised his hand, revealing a small, intricate device that hummed with an ominous energy.
It was the same device that he had used to extinguish the lights in the cottage, the device that had plunged them into this nightmare.
"What are you doing?" Ling Chen asked, his voice laced with a mixture of fear and disbelief.
Hua Lian didn't answer. He simply activated the device, unleashing a wave of energy that washed over the chamber, enveloping everything in a blinding light.
And then, everything went silent.
And the image that had all to their minds was the image of a small girl crying for help.
