In the blink of an eye, a month had passed.
During this month, Lin Yongming not only consolidated his cultivation but also advanced by one level, reaching the 15th-level Soul Master realm.
With the increase in strength, the range of his "Mind's Eye" and perception abilities naturally expanded. After absorbing the Thunder Leopard's soul ring, his perception range suddenly increased to over thirty meters.
One morning, as usual, Lin Yongming prepared to head to the hill behind the village for his training.
However, as soon as he stepped out of his house, he noticed an elderly man and a young boy approaching from a distance.
It was the village chief and his grandson, Lei Zhengming.
When Lei Zhengming saw Lin Yongming at the door, he left his grandfather behind and ran straight toward him.
"Blindie, I broke through! Thanks to the soul beast meat you shared with me and the cultivation method, I advanced by one level this month. Thank you!" Lei Zhengming said excitedly as he reached Lin Yongming.
Lin Yongming had grown accustomed to being called "Blindie" by the village children.
After all, every child in the village had a nickname—like Dog Egg, Second Dog, Rat, or Tiger. Lei Zhengming himself had a nickname given by the other kids.
"Little Wolf, congratulations! I hope you get your first soul ring soon," Lin Yongming replied.
Lei Zhengming was the second child in the village, besides Lin Yongming, to possess innate soul power. After receiving the meditation technique from the Spirit Hall's deacon, Lin Yongming had also taught it to Lei Zhengming.
"Blindie, can you actually see? During your battle with the soul beast, it seemed like you had eyes all over your body. The soul beast couldn't even touch you. When I think about the look in that soul beast's eyes, I still feel a bit scared," Lei Zhengming said, circling Lin Yongming with curiosity.
"Well, maybe because I've been blind since childhood, my senses are more sensitive. My hearing is sharp, and after becoming a Soul Master, I developed something called spiritual power, which allows me to perceive my surroundings. See, I don't even need a walking stick anymore," Lin Yongming replied, half-truthfully.
"Spiritual power?" Lei Zhengming closed his eyes and tried to sense his surroundings, but all he could hear were faint sounds. He had no idea where he was.
"It's no use. Maybe it's because I'm only at the third level of soul power, or maybe I don't have a soul ring yet," Lei Zhengming said, giving up.
"Haha! Using spiritual power like that consumes a lot of energy. If you have eyes, just use them," Lin Yongming advised.
After all, Lei Zhengming didn't have the "Mind's Eye" like Lin Yongming. Children are naturally curious, and if Lei Zhengming took his words too seriously, he might overuse his spiritual power and cause irreversible damage.
"You're right," Lei Zhengming nodded in agreement.
"By the way, why did you and the village chief come to see me? Is there something you need?" Lin Yongming asked.
"Let me explain," the village chief said. Though slightly hunched and walking slowly, he had reached them during their conversation.
"Chief," Lin Yongming greeted respectfully.
"Xiao Ming, I came to see you today because there's something I'd like to discuss," the village chief said, stroking his beard with a smile.
"Chief, please go ahead," Lin Yongming nodded, curious about what the village chief wanted.
"Well, it's been over a month since you and Ming'er awakened your spirits. The only Soul Master Academy in Wurto Town is about to start its new term. I was thinking of sending both of you there to learn about being a Soul Master," the village chief explained.
"That's right! My father is in town, and yesterday he sent word that the Primary Soul Master Academy will begin enrollment the day after tomorrow," Lei Zhengming added.
"Primary Soul Master Academy? Chief, is this why you came to see me?"
"Thank you, Chief, but as you know, my situation is special. Even if I went to the academy, I wouldn't be able to learn much. I'd rather stay in the village and focus on my cultivation."
Lin Yongming was surprised that the village chief had come to discuss schooling. However, after some thought, he decided to decline.
He was already quite familiar with the world of Douluo Continent. The knowledge taught at a Primary Soul Master Academy might not be as useful as what he already knew.
Moreover, since he couldn't see, he wouldn't be able to read books in the library. Attending the academy would only bring unnecessary frustration.
The Primary Soul Master Academy required six years of study, and Lin Yongming preferred the peace and quiet of the village for his cultivation.
"Blindie, didn't you just say you can sense your surroundings? You can hear the teachers, so why not learn as much as you can?" Lei Zhengming countered.
"That's right, Xiao Ming. Remember what happened a month ago? If you had known more about soul beasts, you wouldn't have had to take such a big risk," the village chief added, trying to persuade him.
"I can sense my surroundings, but I can't see the books or what the teachers are teaching. It would only cause more frustration. Chief, you should take Little Wolf to the academy first," Lin Yongming replied with a smile, still refusing.
"Alright, I won't push you. It's true that being alone outside would be difficult for you," the village chief said, giving up.
"Blindie, don't worry. Once I've learned something, I'll come back and teach you everything the teachers taught me," Lei Zhengming said, patting Lin Yongming's shoulder.
"Thank you," Lin Yongming nodded.
With that, the grandfather and grandson left, and Lin Yongming continued on his way to the hill behind the village.
Five days later, the village chief returned to the village with a few other villagers.
"Xiao Ming, since you're not going to the academy, I brought you two books. Your father can read them to you. One is about common classifications of soul beasts on the continent, and the other is about identifying the age of soul beasts," the village chief said, handing over the books.
"Thank you, Chief. After dinner, I'll ask my father to read them to me," Lin Yongming said politely, accepting the books.
He hadn't expected the village chief to bring him books.
"Xiao Ming, you have no idea how lively the academy is. It's a shame you're not going. You might have made some friends there," the village chief said regretfully.
"It's alright, Chief. I wouldn't be able to see the lively atmosphere anyway. Besides, I prefer a quieter environment," Lin Yongming replied.
"You're something else. Alright, I won't disturb your cultivation anymore."
"Take care, Chief."
After Lei Zhengming left for the Primary Soul Master Academy, Lin Yongming's life became even quieter. The other children in the village rarely came to see him.
Thus, Lin Yongming's life fell into a routine. In the mornings, he cultivated his soul power on the hill behind the village. In the afternoons, he practiced his skills. After dinner, he would have his father, Lin Chong, read the books to him for an hour.
Time flew by, and before he knew it, a year and a month had passed. As the sun rose, Lin Yongming exhaled a breath of energy.
"My soul power has reached its limit. It's time to find a second soul ring."
Lin Yongming's soul power had reached the 20th level three months ago. Now, it was impossible for him to advance further without absorbing a second soul ring.
