August broke through the fighters and ran up to the frozen Anita. There had been an energy malfunction in her suit and it had shut down. The girl was conscious and asked him to move Pepper to safety. August did as Stark asked him and dragged the unconscious Potts under fire to a shelter of concrete blocks and steel. Then he went back to Anita and dragged her away already. With the iron suit, the girl weighed over one hundred and fifty kilos. In order to drag the girls safely, the mercenary sometimes threw grenades in the direction of the gunmen.
- Hit me on the back! - shouted Stark, while August fired from cover to keep the attackers away. The man could have safely dealt with a dozen gunmen, but the knives coming in from different directions prevented him from doing so. The tattooed girl on the rooftop was throwing her daggers at him and moving after each throw, it was almost impossible to track her in the dark under heavy fire.- Why, do you want me to break your back?! My punch can bend steel with ease!
- On my back is a nuclear reactor reboot unit. There's been a malfunction in the reactor and I need to restart it. Your punch will do just that! - Anita shouted from the suit and Augustus dropped the unloaded pistol to the ground without a word and hit the woman in the back. - Ah, not that hard!
Servos sounded, eyes glowed and the Stark suit hissed. Anita leaned out of cover and fired two energy volleys from the repulsors on her arms, hitting the two bandits.
- We need to get out of here, while we deal with the gunmen and the tattooed woman on the roof, Pepper will bleed to death! - August looked up at the black haired girl on the roof, she waved at him in greeting. It was pointless to shoot at her, the distance was too great and she would be able to dodge the shot.
- I don't have enough energy to carry you two! My arms will fail during the flight and we'll crash!
August reacted in time and fended off another attack with his throwing daggers. A couple of them slammed into his shoulder again. He hid behind cover and pulled the daggers out, opening the wound and letting regeneration do its work.
- It's only targeting me for some reason," August muttered thoughtfully, and then a little louder to Anita. - The three of us wouldn't have been able to get away anyway, someone has to stay behind to cover us. You go with Pepper, I'll take cover.
- Okay," Stark said quietly, analysing the situation. Secretly, the girl trusted in the mercenary's regeneration, hoping that the healing factor could save him.
Inside, Augustus heaved a sigh of relief. He knew that Anita was not the kind of girl who would get hysterical and play the hero who would save everyone. She was a smart woman and understood everything without him, just waiting for the mercenary to offer himself as a cover so he wouldn't have to make a hard decision for himself. Pepper was closer to Anita's heart than the recently met mercenary.
- I'm about to drop the smoke and flash-bang grenades, take off immediately afterwards. The tattooed one is currently sitting on the roof to our left at eight o'clock. I've managed to calculate her movement. I'll use suppressive fire on her after the grenades. That should give you enough time to gain a decent altitude.
- I'll pay you ten million, but don't you dare die here, - Anita crawled up to August and looked through the helmet into the only open eye of the mercenary.
- When I heard about the big prize, I felt like dying right away...
- You're such a fool, you don't look like a typical shy man.
- You should have realised a long time ago that I'm special," the mercenary said with a chuckle, taking the last of the grenades out of his pouch and laying them out in front of him. Two smoke bombs, two flash bombs and one fragmentation grenade. - I start in a minute, get ready.
Anita crawled away from August and gently picked up Pepper. Fastening it to her suit, the girl signalled to the mercenary. He counted down the last seconds and leaned out of his hiding place to his full height.
The stun grenades flew, followed by a delayed burst of smoke. While the fighters on the ground were trying to figure out what was going on, August had already opened fire on the tattooed girl's position.
Anita launched her repulsors and took off into the sky, quickly gaining altitude. All the attention of the opponents was concentrated on the mercenary who came out of hiding. As soon as the ammunition in the pistols ran out and the smoke cleared, all guns opened fire on the Augustus who had emerged. Several incoming throwing knives, from a clearly pissed off ninja girl, nearly hit the eye socket of the mercenary's mask. His superhuman perception allowed him to save his eye, setting the protected part in time.
The bullets battered against the armour plates on his body as the mercenary retreated back to cover. The last remaining fragmentation grenade he tossed aside as he retreated towards his opponents to reduce the degree of their fire suppression. Except the throwing daggers wouldn't leave the retreating man alone. When he reached his former hiding place all the unprotected parts on his back were stabbed with knives. This time the tattooed girl didn't trifle and showed her full power. Apparently Stark's departure had made her very angry.
Augustus reloaded his pistols, sitting behind cover. His mind raced through his escape options. The daggers lodged in his back tingled unpleasantly, the man carefully pulled them out, placing them in front of him. In total he pulled out fifteen throwing knives.
- Sick, where did she get so much iron from?
Police sirens wailed in the distance. Police were rushing to the scene of the shooting. The gunmen's fire on August's position stopped, and he peeked out for a second to monitor the situation. The bandits were retreating to their vehicles, intent on escaping.
- Looks like this is my chance, I've got to get out of here too.
The man got up and started to move to the left. An unusual beeping knife flew under his feet, a second of realisation and the mercenary jumps back to his hiding place, there is an explosion.- Looks like I've run into the local batman with his hilarious batboomerangs. He wants to turn me in to the police for that purpose now he's holding me at the construction site. It's clear from his behaviour that he's not working with the gunmen who kidnapped Potts. The question is, who have I done enough damage to put me behind bars? Fucking Obadiah!
- This is the NYPD, the area is cordoned off, everybody, cease fire and lay down your weapons! Repeat.
As the mercenary listened to the stern female voice on the horn, he thought. He had a full magazine of phosphorus rounds with him. A couple of shots at the police barricade would be enough of a distraction and he could get out safely. While the cops make a fuss. The only downside is the possible deaths of ordinary police officers.
August was a bastard, but killing innocents suited him. He's not a villain, he's a mercenary.
The man took out his phone and dialled Stark's personal number on it. She quickly picked up the phone and started inquiring about his condition. Augustus shut the girl up and quickly explained the situation to her. The woman was quiet for a while and then told him to lay down his weapons and surrender to the cops. She would be able to get him out of detention.
After saying goodbye to Anita, the man tossed the tube into the sand and pulled out a magazine of phosphorus rounds. If he was found in possession of white phosphorus rounds, they would add additional charges. He didn't need that.
Finding a secluded spot, the mercenary dug a hole in it and put the magazine wrapped in a small pouch and buried it there. He covered the top with rubbish to make it inconspicuous.
- All right, I've got it, seven centimetres under. Now we've got to disarm, so we don't have to bother Miss Policeman too much.
August threw off his off-load and carefully laid his pistols on the sand. He didn't take off his armour, because he didn't know what would happen. He didn't know whether the tattooed maniac had disappeared from the rooftops or was still sitting there. Now he would undress, and she would finish him off with a few accurate throws.
Torches shone towards the mercenary's hideout. The police searching the construction site found him.
- Don't move! Get up slowly with your hands up. Girl, we are not going to joke, if you make a sudden movement, we will open fire on you! - shouted a woman dressed in a black tactical SWAT uniform.
- I'm lifting, I'm lifting, but don't shoot, okay? - Augustus threw his empty hands out of hiding first and then slowly stood up himself. He was surrounded by a dozen matchmakers.
- Hands! Give me your hands, or I'll break them! - the biggest girl of the lot threw the mercenary down.
- You're already trying to break my arms! Girls, let's just calm down, I realise that our meeting was not quite right, but I'm a nice guy.
- A bloke? - was surprised by the main arm breaker.
- Can't you tell?
- I report, we have a male terrorist here, what do we do with him? - The captain stepped aside, apparently, and began to pass information to someone on the radio. Active and aggressive matchmakers stopped their pressure and just stood silently, carefully keeping their hands on August's body.
- Take him away, but be careful, we don't want any unnecessary problems, - the captain returned after a few minutes of talking on the radio.
- Please hold out your hands, - the girls asked the mercenary politely, lifting him from the ground. August stretched out his hands and they put bracelets on them.
- Take him to the minibus, but be careful ladies, not like last time. If I find out anyone's been harassing a male prisoner again, I'll tear their hands off!
- Don't worry, Miss Captain, I won't complain. I might even enjoy it!
- You're a talkative fellow," said the captain.
(Before the matchmakers found out August was a boy)
