The world shattered.
Emma hit the ground hard, the force of the explosion sending her sprawling across the cavern floor. Dust and debris rained down, choking the air as she gasped for breath.
"Alexander!"
She scrambled to her feet, searching through the swirling darkness. The Guardian's pulse of energy had thrown him across the chamber, and now—
He was gone.
"No, no, no…"
Her hands trembled as she scanned the collapsing cavern. The ancient altar stood at the center, pulsing with dark energy, the shadowy figure of the Guardian looming over it.
"You made a mistake," Emma hissed, clenching her fists.
The Guardian's golden eyes burned.
"A sacrifice was demanded. A sacrifice was given."
Emma's heart pounded. "You took him! Where is he?"
The Guardian tilted its head, considering her. "He now walks between realms. His fate is sealed."
A chill crawled down her spine.
Between realms?
That meant—
He wasn't dead.
Not yet.
But he wasn't here either.
Emma's blood ran cold. "Then I'll bring him back."
The Guardian let out a low, hollow laugh. "Foolish girl. You cannot defy the laws of this world."
She took a step forward. "Watch me."

The Cavern Crumbles
The ground shook violently, splitting the chamber apart.
The underground lake surged, black water rising in waves. The Revenant who had survived the explosion were scrambling toward the tunnels, their loyalty crumbling with the cave.
Emma had seconds to escape.
But she wasn't leaving without Alexander.
She sprinted toward the altar, her heart hammering in her chest. The Guardian watched, impassive, as she reached for the shattered obsidian pieces littering the ground.
"Do you truly think you can save him?"
Emma ignored the voice. She clutched a shard of the stone, the pulse of ancient energy burning into her palm.
The moment her skin made contact—
A vision slammed into her.

The Between Realm
The world shifted.
Emma gasped, stumbling into darkness.
No cavern. No collapsing tunnels.
Just…endless twilight.
Shadows twisted around her, stretching into infinity.
And then—
She saw him.
Alexander stood at the edge of the abyss, his body half-submerged in darkness.
His face was pale, his usually sharp eyes clouded.
"Alexander!" Emma rushed forward, but her steps felt heavy. Like the air itself was trying to hold her back.
He didn't move.
She reached out, her fingers grazing his wrist—
His eyes snapped to hers.
"Emma?"
His voice was hoarse, barely above a whisper.
"You're not supposed to be here," he murmured.
Emma's chest ached. "And you are?"
A faint smirk played at his lips, but it faded just as quickly. "I made a deal. I—"
His body jerked violently.
The abyss pulled at him, shadows wrapping around his arms like chains.
Emma's pulse spiked. "No. No, I'm not letting you go."
She dug her heels in, gripping his arm.
"Emma, you need to leave." His expression turned serious. "This place—it's not meant for you."
"I don't care." She tightened her grip. "You think I'd just leave you here?"
He stared at her, something unreadable in his eyes.
"You're impossible."
"And you're an idiot if you think I'd walk away."
The shadows tightened.
A deep, resonating voice whispered through the air.
"One must remain."
Emma froze.
"What?"
The abyss rippled.
A figure emerged from the darkness. Not the Guardian—something older.
A presence so vast, so ancient, that even the shadows seemed to bow before it.
"A soul for a soul," the voice intoned.
Emma's stomach twisted. "No."
Alexander stiffened beside her. "It won't let us both leave."
She turned to face him. "Then we find another way."
His gaze softened. "You always think there's another way."
"Because there is." She grabbed both of his arms now, refusing to let go. "I am not—**not—**losing you, Alexander."
He exhaled, his hands slowly covering hers.
For a moment, the shadows stilled.
Then, he moved.
His grip tightened. His weight shifted.
And before she could react—
He pushed her.

Back to Reality
Emma gasped.
Her body slammed onto solid ground.
Light flooded her vision. Cold air rushed into her lungs.
She was back.
The cavern was nearly collapsed, rubble caving in from every side. The underground lake was gone, drained into the earth below.
The Guardian stood above her, watching in silence.
Emma's chest heaved. "No. No, send me back."
The Guardian tilted its head. "He made a choice."
She struggled to stand. "I don't accept that."
"The balance has been restored."
Emma shook her head. "Then I'll break it again."
The Guardian studied her for a long moment. Then, a faint smile.
"You remind me of another," it mused. "One who defied fate."
Emma clenched her fists. "Then you know I won't stop."
The cavern rumbled.
The last of the tunnel walls gave way, flooding the chamber with light from above.
Emma turned her gaze to the sky.
She had made a promise.
And she was going to keep it.
No matter what it took.
