Chapter 3

With a myriad of thoughts swirling in my mind, my team leader suddenly tossed a file onto my desk.

"Take this to Mr. Winters."

Without a second thought, I tossed the file right back.

Ethan is my ex-boyfriend who, for some inexplicable reason, has now become my direct superior. I should be avoiding any contact with him if possible, right?

The team leader shoved the file back into my hands. "Everyone knows you have a special relationship with the new CEO. You're the best person to deliver this file."

I opened my mouth to explain but found myself at a loss for words.

After pursing my lips and gathering my thoughts for a while, I finally took a deep breath.

Here goes nothing!

Besides, this could be a chance to explain what just happened.

Arriving at the office door, I knocked three times politely. Only after hearing a "Come in" from inside did I dare to enter.

I walked quickly to the desk with my head down, placed the file on it, and then mustered up the courage to speak, "Ethan... Shaw... Mr. Winters... this file needs your signature."

After I finished speaking, I was met with silence for what felt like an eternity.

Biting my lip, I sneakily raised my head.

My eyes met his, full of amusement.I took a sharp breath and finally said what I'd been wanting to say all along, "Could you please explain to everyone that what you said in the elevator was just a joke?"

"After all, because of what you said earlier, I'm in a pretty awkward situation now..."

Otherwise, if things keep going this way, I'm bound to be dissected by all the office gossip groups behind my back.

Ethan's dark gaze fell on my face as he suddenly stood up and moved closer to me.

A familiar, pleasant scent suddenly wafted into my nostrils, and I froze, not daring to move.

I furrowed my brow, about to step back, when he suddenly grabbed my wrist.

"When you so casually dumped me back then, did you ever think about my situation?"

His low voice poured into my ear as his thumb gently caressed the inside of my wrist...

I let out a guilty sigh, intending to break free from his grip, but instead found myself trapped as he swung his leg across, pinning me between his thighs.

Ethan's voice suddenly turned stern, "Hmm?"

"Knock knock knock..." A sudden knocking at the door was followed by a crisp voice from outside, "Mr. Winters, it's me."

Upon hearing the voice, Ethan frowned and finally released me.I instinctively began tidying up my appearance before the other person entered.

The one who came in was a female secretary with big wavy curls, dressed in professional attire.

This secretary had just been transferred over along with Ethan.

For a moment, I was stunned when I saw who it was.

The secretary before me was none other than Ethan's childhood sweetheart, Felicity.

Back when Mr. Winters and I were still together, Felicity had admitted to my face that she liked Ethan.

I never imagined that now that we've broken up, she would still be by Ethan's side, even becoming his personal secretary.

After Felicity entered, her gaze quickly and subtly swept over me before she professionally pulled out a document from her arms, "Mr. Winters, this is this year's sales report for your review."

In contrast to how she treated me, Ethan naturally took the document from her.

In this environment, my presence felt extremely superfluous.

"Mr. Winters, if there's nothing else, I'll head back downstairs now."Words spoken, I turned and left without another glance.
