Alighting from the car and rushing into the house, Tasha made her way to her room, only to be greeted by the angry stare of her mother.
"Mom"
She paused, taking in deep breath. She knew her mother too well—especially the way she leaned in the chair, It only spoke volumes. That she saw the news first before her.
"What is the meaning of all this, Tasha?" Martha Bane questioned, seeing that her daughter was not saying anything.
Raising her head she voiced out her mind, "Mom, please. Not now" Not even waiting for what her mother's reply would be, she took a step away. But Martha Bane had other plans.
"Not Now? Tasha, you dare to tell me that now, huh?"
"Yes, what would you have me do?" She snapped at her mother.
"Come back to your senses and give me a better explanation why you went to see that Wayne boy, knowing very well he is now married and why you made up stories that their marriage was fake news and that it was just gossip and it will end very soon. Rather, the face I see on the news
is not anyone else but that so-called best friend of yours and her marriage with CALLOUS WAYNE!"
"How the hell do you want me to answer that question, Mom?"
"How else are you supposed to answer if not opening that tiny mouth of yours and start speaking now? You had one simple task. Find a way to worm yourself back into the Wayne boy's heart, so he will take you back again and cancel his engagement with that silly Berlin girl."
"That's enough Mother! Why do you think I worked so hard to be his secretary and remained her friend after everything that good-for-nothing Berlin did to me?."
"Tasha!" Martha yelled in anger. "How dare you speak to me like that!"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm sick of everyone expecting so much from me! Do you think I don't want my lover back? That I don't hate her with every fiber of my being?
At first, I treated her as a friend till she went behind my back and took what was mine, right under my nose. She kept saying she didn't want the marriage and that it was being forced under her throat, she didn't have a choice. But she did have a choice and she chose to let me down. I distaste everything about her. She came from that disgusting slum of hers and tore my relationship apart."
"Tasha, I know you feel hurt"
"No, mom. You do not know anything. What did you do when Dad did absolutely nothing? Not even going to see the Wayne, to arrange a marriage for Callous and me or talk some sense into the Wayne, not to marry their son off to that bitch!"
"Come to think of it, I do not know dear."
"Don't dare, tell me you don't know Mom. Things are already bad enough.
It's far worse and horrifying if you ask me. I have been working my ass off all my life before and after the betrothal. And now they are married. I still haven't won what's mine. She was not supposed to be on the internet or the pictures or the headlines. It was supposed to be me! But what happened? I don't have a damn clue!"
"But how can you say you don't know? You said the betrothal was nothing as it had been set up a long time ago and it might not hold that much water and the Wayne boy was reluctant to the proposal of the marriage. It was the main reason I believed the news was indeed untrue and things will go in your favor this time around."
"Well, it didn't and I do not know, Mom. Don't you get it? I spoke to that brat Berlin day in and day out. And she let me on all the gritty little details. That's how I knew everything was going as smoothly as planned. When he was in the States and when he got back from the States, we used to be intimate. I tried getting pregnant but to no avail. And just one time, I did the... unthinkable. He caught me red-handed, Mom. I have been making plans time and time again, begging him to take me back but he wouldn't and out of the blue he listens to his mother and marries Berlin, She keeps getting the upper hand. Mom...I was willing to create a scandal. So, that Callous will have no choice but to marry me!"
"It failed." Her nails dug into her palms
"Why didn't you let me in on this!" Martha Bane could see how her daughter was trying.
"It didn't happen, Mom. Everything went down the drain!" She shook her head and ran to the washroom.
Her pain was etched deep within her soul. Never had she felt like such a complete failure before. She was trying her best not to cry, but the weight of everything crushed her. Not only had she failed to create a scandal and ruin the wedding altogether, but every desperate move she made had backfired spectacularly.
And then, in a final, reckless attempt to make him jealous, she had slept with someone else—the wrong person. Maybe if it had been a stranger, she could have hidden it, but no. It had to be someone close to Callous, someone with enough power she had only disgusted him further.
Now, she was still working for him, but only because he believed she was good at her job and nothing more. A mere secretary, no more office romance. No personal attachment. Strictly business. But deep down, she still wanted him.
"Tasha, sweety, come back here."
Ignoring her mom, she ran up to the washroom as tears began to flow out of her eyes uncontrollably.
"Tasha, we are going to find another way." Martha Bane called out while chasing after her daughter.
But Tasha wasn't listening. She clutched the edges of the sink, staring at her reflection in the shattered mirror. She was Soo enraged and desperate.
It was supposed to be her, not Berlin.
Ring! Ring!
Then her gaze flickered to her vanity, where her phone lit up with an incoming call.
'unknown number'
Hesitantly, she answered
"Miss Bane, I believe we share a common enemy. And I have a proposal that might interest you."
"Who is this?" She demanded.
"The one who can give you exactly what you want."
The call ended.
Was she about to make a deal with the devil?
