It all began in Bowser's Castle, where Mario and Luigi had once again teamed up to rescue Princess Peach. But this time, something went horribly wrong.
As Mario reached out to Luigi for help, dangling over a sea of lava, Luigi hesitated. Whether out of fear, jealousy, or something darker, Luigi let go. Mario's hand slipped, and he fell into the molten depths, his screams echoing through the castle as the lava consumed him. Luigi watched in horror, paralyzed by guilt, as his brother disappeared beneath the surface.
But death was not the end for Mario. The lava did not destroy him—it transformed him. His spirit, twisted by betrayal and rage, emerged as Xeno Mario, a monstrous entity with a distorted version of his former self. His iconic red hat and overalls remained, but his face was now a grotesque mask: a wide, unnerving smile stretched across his face, his eyes glowing a hellish red. He was no longer the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom—he was its nightmare.
Ten months after the incident, Luigi woke up in a cold sweat, his nightmares refusing to let him go. Every night, he relived the moment he let Mario fall, hearing his brother's screams and feeling the weight of his guilt crushing him. Desperate for redemption, Luigi decided to return to Bowser's Castle, hoping to find closure or perhaps a way to undo what he had done.
But the Mushroom Kingdom was no longer the vibrant, colorful world he remembered. The sky was pitch black, the sun replaced by a giant, unblinking red eye that seemed to watch his every move. The castle loomed ahead, its once-grand halls now filled with the stench of death. Corpses littered the floor, their blood pooling into a crimson lake. Luigi's heart pounded as he stepped inside, his boots squelching in the gore.
Suddenly, words appeared in the air, written in bloody script:
"Hello... Bro~"
Xeno Mario's voice echoed through the castle, dripping with mockery and malice. Luigi froze, his breath catching in his throat. The voice was unmistakably Mario's, but it was warped, filled with a hatred that made Luigi's blood run cold.
(Level 1: Bowser's Castle)
Luigi pressed on, determined to face whatever awaited him. He crossed a bridge over a lake of lava, the heat searing his skin. As he reached the other side, more words appeared:
"Does this scene bring back certain... memories for you?"
Luigi's heart ached as he remembered the day Mario fell. He pushed forward, entering a room where he found Daisy's lifeless body impaled on a spike. Her blood dripped onto the floor, and her wide, accusing eyes seemed to stare straight into his soul. Luigi collapsed to his knees, tears streaming down his face.
"Your crying is beautiful, bro... I've never seen you cry like this when you let go of my hand."
The words cut deeper than any blade. Luigi clenched his fists, his guilt and grief threatening to overwhelm him. But he couldn't give up—not yet.
(Level 2: Secret Room)
Luigi ran through the castle, his mind racing. He stumbled into a room where Princess Peach stood beside Mario, who appeared normal for a fleeting moment. Relief washed over Luigi—until Mario's form twisted and warped, transforming into Xeno Mario. With a sickening grin, Xeno Mario grabbed Peach and tore her in half, her screams echoing through the room.
Luigi screamed in horror, but there was no time to mourn. Xeno Mario turned to him, his red eyes glowing with malevolent glee. Luigi bolted, diving into a green pipe just as Xeno Mario lunged at him.
(Level 3: Black Desert)
The pipe led Luigi to a desolate wasteland. The sky was black, the clouds twisted into faces that wept blood. Corpses littered the ground, their faces frozen in expressions of terror. Luigi tried to hit a Lucky Block, hoping for a power-up, but it crumbled into dust. Xeno Mario's voice echoed through the desert:
"Luigi~"
The voice was both cheerful and terrifying, a cruel mockery of the brotherly bond they once shared. Luigi ran, his head pounding with pain and fear. He found a door and stepped through, only to find himself back in Bowser's Castle—but it was even more horrifying than before.
"Isn't this fun, Luigi? The horror... the fear... everything that's happening to you now, do you like it?"
Luigi ran through the castle, Xeno Mario's taunts echoing in his ears:
"I am all~... I am nothing. I'm not like Mx or Mr. L... Oh, Luigi."
Suddenly, Luigi collided with Xeno Mario. The creature's red eyes bore into him, and Luigi felt his mind unraveling. Xeno Mario's mouth opened impossibly wide, and dozens of hands reached out, grabbing Luigi and pulling him into the void. As Luigi disappeared, Xeno Mario turned to the player, his grin widening.
"It's all over... but you were too late to save him!"
Bad Ending:
The screen faded to black, and a message appeared:
"Think you can escape? I am everywhere... and at all times."
The screen flickered back to life, showing Xeno Mario staring directly at the player. The image distorted, showing glimpses of other worlds and dimensions, all under Xeno Mario's control. A final message appeared:
"The End... or maybe the Beginning."
