Chapter 10: The Thin Ice Beneath

Mia walked back into the office with an unfamiliar feeling in her chest—uncertainty mixed with something dangerously close to excitement. Lunch with Adrian had been… unexpected. Not because of the place or the food, but because of the man himself.

He had lowered his guard, even if only slightly, and that made him feel more real to her. Less like the arrogant CEO and more like someone who carried his own burdens, just like she did.

But that didn't mean she was about to throw caution to the wind.

She had made that mistake once—believing she could trust someone completely. That person had betrayed her, and she wasn't about to let history repeat itself.

Shaking off her thoughts, she settled back into work. However, just as she began typing an email, her phone buzzed with a message.

Adrian: Did you make it back safely?

Mia stared at the screen. It was such a simple question, but coming from Adrian, it felt significant. She hesitated for a moment before typing back.

Mia: Yes. Thank you for lunch.

The reply came almost instantly.

Adrian: We should do it again sometime.

Her fingers hovered over the keyboard. She should say no. She should remind him that they had a professional relationship and nothing more.

Instead, she typed: Maybe.

As the days passed, things between Mia and Adrian didn't exactly return to normal. There was an awareness between them now, an unspoken tension that neither addressed directly. Every glance held a challenge, every conversation carried an undercurrent of something deeper.

And it wasn't just her imagination. The office had noticed, too.

"Okay, spill," Rachel, her coworker, whispered as they prepared for a meeting. "What's going on with you and Mr. Tall, Dark, and Arrogant?"

Mia choked on her coffee. "What? Nothing!"

Rachel arched an eyebrow. "Right. And I'm the Queen of England."

Mia groaned. "It's just work. He's my boss, and that's it."

Rachel smirked. "Sure, keep telling yourself that."

Before Mia could respond, Adrian walked into the conference room, his presence commanding attention as always. His gaze briefly flickered to her before he addressed the room.

"Let's begin."

Mia took a deep breath and forced herself to focus. But as the meeting progressed, she couldn't shake the feeling that she was walking on thin ice.

And Adrian Blackwood was the fire threatening to melt it.
