- One Americano," I said quietly as I walked into a small cafe overlooking the ocean. I'm not really a coffee drinker, but this was the only place I'd found where I could smoke in peace.
It's only a couple of hours until my meeting with Aquaman, if he doesn't get here sooner. And I still haven't decided to take anyone from the squad. The problem is that none of them can stay at the bottom of the ocean without special equipment, unlike me.
So if their equipment malfunctions, they will immediately become a balance. Even the Hassans...
However, I'm strong enough to solve such problems myself. I certainly have a lot of power in the water, at least more than the Atlanteans.
- Your coffee, sir," the waitress said, bringing me my coffee. I calmly took it and lit a cigarette. Now it was safe to wait. Hassan was waiting at the harbour just in case, and he would report to me if anything happened there.
In the meantime, I was trying to think of a plan to follow. Flood is a terrorist group from Atlantis. We and the kings of Atlantis need to take him down.
I'm sure they'll know at least the approximate location of some of the Flood's troops, or their possible whereabouts. Then we can go after them and capture a few for interrogation.
In the other case... Such organisations are very often supported by several kinds of people. Firstly, by rich people who want power or privileges of some kind. The second type are the poorest, hungriest and weakest people in the country. Those who are tired of living like this and want to change everything. Although in fact such people are just puppets in the hands of the first, which are so easy to use.
But through the latter it will still be possible to reach the former. After all, the members of the Flood are most likely former poor people and their kind. And some of them have relatives left in poor neighbourhoods. These methods are not the most pleasant, but they can be used for the sake of peace and justice.
- Master, he's here," I heard Hassan's voice in my earpiece. It was time to go.
I stood up and put a few dozen quid on the table, heading out of the cafe. I didn't have long to walk, and I didn't want to teleport, so I wasn't in a big hurry.
- Wait, you're Major Argent, aren't you? - I heard a woman's voice behind me, which made me turn around. It was a dark-haired girl with joy in her eyes. For some reason her appearance reminded me of something... Hmm, well, whatever.
- Yes," I said simply, looking at her indifferently.
- Please give me an autograph, I admire you so much! - she said, coming up to me and grabbing my hand. And that's not very polite, but... Well, you have to get used to it, I'm a famous person now.
- Sure, where do I sign? - I said calmly, not expressing any negativity about her excessive closeness.
- Right here. You can just write that it's for Adeline," she said, smiling sweetly. I just signed it and got out of her grip and walked away quickly, not even saying goodbye. For some reason, she seemed a little too weird to me.
Paranoia or some kind of premonition? I don't know, but either way, I'd better hurry up to meet Arthur.
When I got to the harbour, I saw the man I was looking for. Only this time he was not in his brightly coloured suit, which would have attracted a lot of attention, but in ordinary clothes.
In front of me stood a blond-haired guy in jeans and a black jacket, under which was a T-shirt with the San Francisco logo.
- Don't you stand out, I see? - I asked him.
- Unlike you, I'm good at it," he replied, looking around at the people who were looking back at me. I'm relatively well known now, so it's hard to hide.
- In any case, I understand that you agree that I will help you? - I said.
- Yes, although many of my 'allies' were against it," he said, emphasising the word allies sarcastically. Well, if he's only recently become king, I'm sure he still has plenty of allies.
- Then I suggest we go at once," I said with a smile.
- Already? And you're going alone? - He asked me, giving me a strange look.
- Well, yes, why hesitate. But about the numbers..." I said with a smile, silent for a while, "I'll be stronger than a small army alone, so yes, it's just me. The others aren't as effective in underwater battles.
- Ahem... okay, if you say so, but I'm afraid my 'allies' won't like that," he said rather awkwardly.
- It's okay, I can always prove my strength if I need to," I told him.
- Well, let's go," he told me.
After that he quickly accelerated and jumped into the water. Well, I won't do the same, I'd rather do something more elegant. As I approached the water, I concentrated and just stood on it. Controlling the water after absorbing Ajax became much easier. Still, Aang's powers needed movement, for better control. And this way I can control the water, even completely paralysed.
- Ahem... Cosplaying Jesus? - Arthur asked me with a strange look.
- Yeah, imitating my favourite fairytale character," I replied simply, thinking for a moment.
- Atheist? - he asked me.
- You could say that," I replied, thinking about the gods. There was no point in not believing in their existence, because I knew for a fact that they existed. But just believing in them would be silly. Gods are certainly not the ones who want to help people, otherwise they would have done it long ago. They're just hypocritical creatures who don't care about people. They just want to control us and use us .
- Well, you know, it's hard to be an atheist in this world. Still, so many strange things really exist, so why should there not be gods? - Aquaman began his philosophical musings, swimming at a fairly high speed, next to me running on the water. Of course, the noise of the water drowned out our voices, but we are clearly vastly outnumbered by humans, and so we could hear everything quietly.
- I'm sure that gods exist, but I definitely don't intend to believe in them," I told him rather seriously.
- Ahhh, there you go. Well, that's not to say I can't understand such an opinion. But still, why are you so sure of their existence? - Aquaman asked me.
- Like you said, our world is full of weirdness. And I have personally seen demons from hell, as well as Amazons worshipping LIVE Greek gods. So there are gods, and it's just a sad reality," I told him, lying a little. I haven't actually seen them yet, but I'm sure I'll definitely be able to see them in the future.
- I hope my meetings with the gods will be friendly.
Yes, how naive. I don't think he meant it, though. It's more like he's just saying it to lighten things up a bit.
- All right, we'd better pick up the pace. It'll take us a couple of years to get to Atlantis at this rate," I said, speeding up.
- Hey!" Aquaman shouted, coming after me, "Do you even know where Atlantis is?
- Absolutely not! - I shouted, still not planning on slowing down, "But I got a rough idea of the direction you were heading.
- Wait for me," he shouted, trying to catch up with me.
But I just kept speeding up as he almost reached me. It was quite fun, and I even felt like a kid playing catch-up again. And I think Arthur felt about the same way, judging by his smile.
It went on like this for quite a while, a few hours or so. Still, Atlantis wasn't particularly close to shore. A couple of times we deviated from the route, but Arthur corrected our path. I wonder if he knows the sea so well, or if he has his own compass in his head.
In any case, we soon stopped, right in the middle of the ocean.
- Here we are," Arthur told me calmly.
- So now we're going deep? - I asked, getting a nod, "How deep?
- Deep enough," he told me, "Don't worry, you'll like it, at least there are plenty of beautiful places in Atlantis.
- Unfortunately, I didn't come here for beautiful places," I told him, a little upset.
- Yeah, I myself hate what you had to come here for," he said, a regretful look on his face.
- Okay, let's go, but remember that it's a little hard for me to talk underwater, but if I need it bad enough, I'll find a way," I told him.
- Okay, then let's swim," he said as he dove in. I followed him, also diving. He was wearing human clothes the whole time, and I don't think he was comfortable in them.
I also dove in quickly, providing myself with air magic. In theory, I could make sounds in the water with water magic, but it wouldn't be very easy, and it would sound weird.
Okay, we don't have long to swim inland. I hope they don't meet me there with pitchforks. Though I don't expect a good-natured greeting either, knowing well the Atlanteans' opinion of land dwellers. And Arthur will have to correct this opinion somehow, and together with me. Yeah, that doesn't sound very fun....
