the first real battle (part2)

Darius kept staring at the spot where he had seen the shadow, his widened eyes still charged with adrenaline.

"What is it?" Adam asked as he stood up, noticing Darius's tense expression.

Darius didn't answer immediately. He kept watching for a moment longer, then finally exhaled and said in a low voice, "I think… someone is watching us."

Adam furrowed his brows and looked toward the spot Darius had pointed at, but all he saw were twisted trees and faint mist creeping between the branches.

"Are you sure?"

Darius wasn't entirely certain, but his instincts had never betrayed him before. "I saw a shadow between the trees, but it disappeared quickly."

Adam let out a slow breath. "Might've been just an illusion from the fight… or maybe a lurking beast."

"Maybe…" But Darius wasn't convinced.

He decided not to dwell on it for now. His body was exhausted, and the wound in his side was still bleeding. He cast a glance at the dead beast, then said, "Let's focus. We need to carve this thing up and make use of it before the scent attracts more creatures."

Adam agreed, and they got to work.

That night, as they sat by the fire, cooking the beast's meat, an unsettling silence hung over them.

Darius was deep in thought.

Adam noticed and asked, "Still thinking about that shadow?"

Darius nodded. "I don't know why, but I have a bad feeling."

Adam glanced toward the dark trees surrounding them and muttered, "In a place like this, a bad feeling usually means you're right."

Silence settled between them.

"Let's take turns keeping watch," Darius finally said. "I don't want us both asleep at the same time."

Adam agreed. "I'll take the first shift."

Darius lay down near the fire, but sleep didn't come easily. The shadow he had seen lingered in his mind.

And somewhere deep in the forest, hidden among the darkness, something—or someone—was still watching.ة
