Julie walked down the hallway, her heart heavy but her resolve firm. She wouldn't let Madison's words break her, not this time. But the doubts still lingered, whispering cruelly in her mind.
What if she's right? What if Noah's just being nice?
She reached her locker, twisting the combination with trembling fingers. The door creaked open, and she was greeted by the sight of her books, neatly stacked, her favorite photo of her and Emma taped to the inside.
A reminder of who she was. Of who she wanted to be.
"Hey, Julie!"
Her heart jumped, and she turned to see Noah walking toward her, his smile warm and sincere.
For a second, all the doubts melted away, replaced by the fluttering in her chest. "Oh… hey, Noah." She tried to sound casual, but her voice wavered, her nerves buzzing.
Noah leaned against the locker beside hers, his blue eyes bright. "I was hoping I'd catch you before class. I wanted to see if you were okay… after, you know… earlier."
Julie looked down, embarrassment heating her cheeks. "You saw that, huh?"
Noah's jaw tightened. "Yeah. And it wasn't cool. I don't get why she's always so mean to you."
Julie shrugged, hugging her books to her chest. "I don't know… I guess she just likes to feel powerful."
Noah's eyes softened. "Well, don't let her get to you. She doesn't know you. Not the real you."
Julie's heart skipped, hope flickering inside her. "You… you think so?"
He smiled, his gaze unwavering. "I know so. You're… different. In a good way."
Her breath caught, her chest tightening with a mix of fear and excitement. But before she could respond, another voice cut through the hallway.
"Noah!"
Julie's heart sank as she saw Madison striding toward them, her eyes locked on Noah. "There you are! I've been looking all over for you."
She completely ignored Julie, positioning herself between them as if she didn't exist. "You promised to help me with that project, remember?" Her voice was syrupy sweet, her eyes batting flirtatiously.
Noah's expression darkened. "I don't remember promising anything, Madison."
Madison's smile faltered, a flash of irritation crossing her face before she quickly masked it. "Oh, come on. You wouldn't leave me hanging, would you?"
Noah crossed his arms, his posture rigid. "Actually, I was talking to Julie. We were kind of in the middle of something."
Julie's heart leaped, a rush of warmth flooding her chest. Did he really just say that?
Madison's eyes narrowed, her lips pressing into a thin line. "Oh. I didn't realize you two were… friends." The word dripped with disdain.
Noah's eyes flicked to Julie, his expression softening. "Yeah. We are."
Julie's breath hitched, her face flushing. Did he really mean it?
Madison's jaw clenched, her eyes hardening. "Well… fine. I'll just find someone else to help me then." She spun on her heel, her hair whipping around her as she stalked off, her shoulders rigid with anger.
Noah let out a breath, shaking his head. "Sorry about that. She's… persistent."
Julie laughed, the sound surprising even herself. "Yeah… she is."
Noah's face softened, his gaze lingering on her. "I meant what I said, Julie. Don't let her get in your head. She's just trying to tear you down because she's jealous."
Julie's chest tightened, her voice barely above a whisper. "Jealous? Of me?"
Noah smiled, his eyes warm. "Yeah. Of you." He glanced at the clock, his face twisting with regret. "I gotta get to class, but… I'll see you later?"
Julie nodded, her heart racing. "Yeah… later."
As he walked away, she felt a warmth spreading through her, melting away the icy grip of Madison's words.
Maybe Noah really did see her. Maybe she wasn't as invisible as she thought.
She closed her locker, her shoulders feeling lighter than they had in days. For the first time, she felt like she could stand a little taller, like she didn't have to hide from Madison or anyone else.
Maybe, just maybe, she was stronger than she thought.
