Whispers of Betrayal

Serena's POV

The weight of the mansion pressed down on me, the walls holding secrets thicker than the air I was struggling to breathe. Something was wrong—Lorenzo had been different lately. I had seen him ruthless before, cold and calculating, but this… this was something else. There was a tension in him, something simmering just below the surface, ready to explode.

I knew better than to ask outright. When Lorenzo didn't want to talk, he wouldn't. But I wasn't the kind of woman to sit in the dark and wait for things to unfold around me.

So, when I found him in his office, staring at a glass of whiskey like it held all the answers in the world, I stepped inside without hesitation.

"You're shutting me out again," I said, my voice soft but firm.

Lorenzo barely moved. His fingers tapped absently against the desk, his expression unreadable. "Go back to bed, Serena."

I crossed my arms. "No."

His eyes flicked up, sharp and assessing, but I didn't back down.

He sighed, rubbing his temple before leaning back in his chair. "It's not your concern."

"That's not your decision to make." I stepped closer, placing my hands on the edge of his desk. "Lorenzo, I know something is wrong. You're different. You barely sleep, you barely talk to me, and when you do, it's like you're somewhere else entirely. You think I don't notice?"

His jaw tightened. "It's not safe for you to be involved in this."

I let out a humorless laugh. "Newsflash, I've been involved since the moment you put that ring on my finger."

Lorenzo exhaled sharply, his eyes searching mine like he was debating how much to say. I could see the war in his head, the part of him that wanted to protect me and the part of him that knew I wouldn't let him.

Finally, he spoke. "There's a rat in my organization."

I blinked. "A rat?"

He nodded. "Someone close to me is feeding information to the Mancinis."

A chill ran down my spine. "How close?"

Lorenzo's lips pressed into a thin line. "Close enough that they knew about our weapons shipment before it even left the docks. The Mancinis hit it. Hard. They took everything."

My stomach twisted. I might not have grown up in this world, but I knew what that meant. A direct attack on Lorenzo's operations wasn't just an inconvenience—it was a declaration of war.

"Do you have any idea who it is?" I asked.

Lorenzo's gaze darkened. "I have my suspicions."

A knock at the door interrupted us before I could ask more. The heavy wooden doors pushed open, and Amir stepped in, his face unreadable but his eyes sharp.

"We have a problem," he announced, his voice grim.

Lorenzo's entire body tensed, and I could see his mind shifting into full Mafia boss mode. "Go on."

"It's about the Mancinis. They're making moves—fast. And I think it has something to do with the leak."

Lorenzo stood, setting his whiskey down. "What did they do?"

"They knew exactly when and where to hit our shipment," Amir said. "It wasn't a lucky guess, Lorenzo. Someone gave them that information."

The room went ice cold.

Lorenzo's expression didn't change, but I could feel the fury radiating from him like heat off asphalt in the summer. His hands clenched at his sides, and for a moment, I swore he was debating whether to punch something—or someone.

"Who was on the inside?" Lorenzo's voice was calm. Too calm.

Amir hesitated. "We're still investigating, but… I think it's someone in your inner circle."

Lorenzo's expression didn't even flicker, but his knuckles went white. "Find out who. Now."

Amir nodded. "Already working on it. I have men tailing a few people who've been acting suspicious. But Lorenzo… we need to be prepared. If this rat has been leaking information this long, they might try something bigger next."

Lorenzo nodded slowly, but there was a dangerous glint in his eyes. "Then I'll remind them exactly who they're dealing with."

Amir gave a small smirk. "That's what I like to hear." He turned to leave but hesitated, glancing at me. "You should keep an eye on your wife too."

I frowned. "Excuse me?"

Amir shrugged. "If the Mancinis are targeting our weak spots, they might try to use her."

Lorenzo's head snapped toward Amir, his entire posture shifting into something deadly. "Serena is not a weak spot."

Amir raised a brow. "Then I hope she knows how to handle herself when the time comes."

Lorenzo shot him a glare that could have melted steel.

Amir chuckled, raising his hands in surrender before walking out.

The moment the door shut behind him, Lorenzo turned to me, his expression unreadable.

"Serena—"

I held up a hand. "Before you say whatever protective bullshit is about to come out of your mouth, let me be clear—I am not a weakness."

His lips twitched like he wanted to argue, but I wasn't finished.

"You can keep trying to shield me from this life, but I'm already in it. You made me your wife, Lorenzo. And that means I'm standing beside you, not hiding behind you."

Something flickered in his eyes—something dark, something dangerous. "You don't understand how brutal this world is."

"I understand more than you think," I shot back. "You think I don't see what you do? What you're capable of? You think I don't know what it means to be married to a man like you?"

Lorenzo stepped forward, closing the space between us, his presence overwhelming. "And what does it mean, Serena?"

I swallowed, but I didn't step back. "It means that if I'm with you, I'm with you. No matter what."

For a long moment, he just stared at me, his expression unreadable. Then, to my shock, he smirked.

"Be careful what you promise, little wife." His voice was low, dangerous. "Because once you give yourself to me fully, there's no turning back."

I lifted my chin. "Maybe I don't want to turn back."

His smirk deepened, but before he could respond, the sound of shattering glass echoed from downstairs.

Lorenzo's entire body tensed. Within seconds, he was moving, grabbing a gun from his desk drawer and striding toward the door.

"Stay here," he ordered.

I rolled my eyes. "Like hell I will."

He didn't have time to argue. The moment he yanked open the door, shouts rang out through the house. The sound of footsteps, of weapons being drawn, of chaos erupting.

My stomach twisted.

The rat was making their move.

And they were already inside.
