Chapter 2: Bonds Forged in Fire.

Holly Ketchum had never been one for the spotlight, preferring to work diligently behind the scenes. But today, as she stood in Professor Oak's lab with Gary, Olive, Ash, and a mysterious boy she could boy place, she knew there was no hiding from the significance of this moment.

"This is it," Professor Oak said, standing before them with a proud smile. "Today, you officially embark on your journeys as Pokémon Trainers."

Holly shifted slightly, her fingers brushing the strap of her camera as she glanced toward the side of the lab where her heart truly belonged—the Pokémon care section. Her eyes instinctively sought out the small bed of hay near the back, where a familiar Growlithe was curled up, ears twitching as if sensing her gaze.

She had worked tirelessly for this opportunity. Long hours studying nutrition and grooming, memorizing dietary needs, learning how to tell if a Pokémon was feeling unwell just by a shift in their posture. It had all led to this moment, and yet, she still hesitated.

Gary smirked, crossing his arms. "Bet you're all expecting me to take the strongest Pokémon here, huh?" He glanced at the Poké Balls displayed on the counter, containing the usual Kanto starters—Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. "Well, you wouldn't be wrong."

Ash, of course, was practically bouncing on his heels. "C'mon, just pick already!"

Holly wasn't in a rush. She already knew what she wanted.

"Have you made your decision, Holly?" Professor Oak's voice was gentle as he turned toward her.

Holly hesitated. "Well… I know it's not traditional, but—"

Before she could finish, the little Growlithe stirred, lifting its head. Its large, amber eyes met hers, and in an instant, it was up, bounding toward her with an eager bark. Holly knelt down just in time to catch him, his fluffy paws pressing into her lap as he licked her chin with happy whines.

Professor Oak chuckled. "I had a feeling you'd say that."

Holly looked up at him, eyes wide. "You… you did?"

The old professor's smile softened. "Of course. That Growlithe has been glued to your side since the day you started here. It would be a shame to separate you two now."

Gary let out a low whistle. "Well, guess that means she's not going for one of the usual starters. Interesting."

Olive adjusted her glasses, smiling knowingly. "It makes sense. Holly's always been good with Pokémon, especially the ones that need extra care. That Growlithe clearly sees her as its trainer already."

Holly swallowed past the lump in her throat, gently ruffling the Growlithe's soft fur. "Then… I guess he's mine?"

Professor Oak nodded. "Not 'guess,' Holly. He is yours." He reached into his pocket, pulling out a Poké Ball with a small engraving of a flame. "I had this prepared for him just in case."

Holly took the ball with reverence, feeling the weight of the moment settle around her. Growlithe barked in excitement, rubbing his head against her cheek. She laughed, warmth spreading through her chest.

"Alright, then," Ash declared, grinning at her. "Looks like we're both setting off today with Pokémon we really care about."

Holly met his gaze, something unspoken passing between them. They had always been different, even as twins—Ash, the wild storm always chasing adventure, and Holly, the quiet flame burning steady. But in this moment, they weren't so different after all.

She looked down at Growlithe, her first Pokémon, her partner. "Looks like we're in this together, buddy."

Growlithe barked again, tail wagging furiously.

And just like that, she got her first Pokemon. Her starter and her new best friend. Holly had high hopes for Growlithe. She was still unsure about battling professionally but she would train him until he felt satisfied with his growth. Holly only wanted what made Growlithe happy.
