Plunged Into Chaos

Sigurd Agnarsson

Before we all knew it, our feet were lifted off the ground, and my clothing slowly floated as the light overtook us. Carrying us high in the air as the sounds of panic and chaos echoed through the courtyard. Most of the seniors were here, slowly levitating upwards as teachers and the younger kids watched on in horror.

My body kept on tumbling forward, unable to control myself as I hear a voice calling out to me, within the screams and chaos of the seniors, "Sigurd!" His familiar voice echoed.

"Einar…!" I spotted him trying to reach toward me.

Before anyone could say anything else, gravity was suddenly inverted, Keeping us at place for just a mere second, letting us realize what was to come. Before a powerful force pulled us deeper into the light. Yanking us from where we floated and rapidly accelerating our bodies.

The sounds of fear and panic filled my ears as I joined them. Unable to hold myself, I screamed at the top of my lungs, the sky around us rapidly left our sight as we were pulled deeper into the unknown. Before any of us knew it, the familiar blue scenery of our home planet had disappeared in the abyss. Drowning us in a deep shade of blue as we continued to fly.

From the chaos and confusion, I spotted dozens more groups of people joining the single stream that we inhabited. Sharing the same expression as everyone else, and amplifying the screams tenfold. There were middle-aged adults with us, elders who are suffering the most, and even unfortunate little kids.

But to my horror, it just kept getting worse. I watched as a man tried to maneuver himself around, but a sudden pull dragged him away from his family. They watched on in terror and despair as their breadwinner disappeared into another stream, his body turning into a black dot the further away he went from us. The worst thing was that it was happening all around us.

Different people were sucked away into separate streams at different speeds, some were slowly dragged away before being yanked into another stream, some fell into another, and others unexpectedly disappeared from our sight as they entered a new one.

I spotted a familiar face in the crowd, slowly drifting away from the mainstream, "Ahhh! Help!"

Even with my anger boiling over within me, my body reached out for Einar, extending as far as I could and managing to grab his hand as he reached for mine. But as I held onto him, I could feel the stream dragging me away as well, "Haaaa-!"

Before I knew it, a firm grip grabbed onto my leg, "Gotcha!"

"Alby!" I realized who it was. Behind him, Sebastian held onto his arm and served as an anchor point as he floated in the middle of the stream. Albrecht pulled with all of his might, dragging me closer to the center with Einar holding my hand tightly.

I could feel the tug weakening as I approached the center, allowing me to pull Einar closer to me. In the end, I managed to stabilize him in the center with us, "Einar! You're okay!" A girl's voice spoke from behind.

Recognizing who it was, I turned to find Helena Brown, barely managing to keep herself steady as she remained in the center. Seeing her face flashed recent events across my mind. The mere sight of her, one of my anchors to life, kissing the one who dragged me down fueled the burning hatred within me yet again.

"I should kick you out of the stream!" Sebastian shouted at Helena, "Kissing Einar like that while Sigurd was literally standing RIGHT there!"

"Don't you think we got more important things to deal with?! Other than this?!" Albrecht shouted.

But as foolish as it was, this was the most important thing to me. I couldn't decipher what exactly at that moment in time, but something just snapped, as I grabbed Einar by the collar harshly, "Agh-! Sigurd-"

"YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE EINAR! HOW DARE YOU!" I spat in his face.

Einar's bewildered expression focused itself on me, "I didn't initiate it, Sigurd-"

"BUT YOU STILL DID IT! YOU BLOODY WANKER!" I couldn't hold myself back, Sebastian and Albrecht reached out to me, trying to break the two of us off. While Helena stood there, watching in shock from the sight.

"Sigurd! Now's not the time-"

"YOU DON'T GET IT! NONE OF YOU DO! GET OFF OF ME-"

Sebastian managed to release my grip on Einar as I flailed in their grasp, "Damn it Sigurd! Control yourself!"

"OF COURSE YOU'RE TAKING HIS SIDE-!" My words came directly from my bleeding heart, "WHY HIM?! WHY-"

Before I could finish my sentence, I realized that we had drifted a bit too far from the center. A sudden force grabbed onto me, slowly pulling me away from the center as everyone watched in horror. "AK-! GAAAH-!"

"Not again-!" Next to me, Einar was slowly drifting away, farther than me. Sebastian and Albrecht reached out for him, the two of them grabbed his shirt and did their best to pull him back to the middle. But they were drifting away as well.

"Shit shit shit!"

"Fuuuck-!"

But for some reason…there were other seniors still with us, alongside some full-grown adults that reached out for the three of them, managing to grab hold of them as they hadn't strayed so far, and with their combined team effort, a bunch of grunting and groaning, they managed to pull them to the middle and stabilizing them eventually.

But they had forgotten about one person. And the three of my 'friends' realized just too late, "Wait-! SIGURD!"

"Why…?" I was already too far gone at this point, drifting away from the mainstream as my vision was blurred with tears. Of course, they went for him…I should have expected that. But it hurts…Why? "Why not me…?"

"NOOOOO!" Einar tried to reach out to me, Sebastian and Albrecht held onto each other as Albrecht held onto Sigurd. Forming a human chain as Einar extended his hand toward me. It was too late at this point. I'm always the last priority, aren't I? "SIGURD!!!"

A sudden yank pulled me away from the mainstream, the silhouettes of the three quickly disappearing from my sight as our tie was broken. I couldn't hear what they were screaming as the distance between us grew exponentially.

I couldn't hold back anymore. The anguish that had been building up inside me finally broke through. Tears blurred my vision as my body was violently dragged through the stream. My body hovered over the line of being torn apart as I continued to fall through my own separate stream.

The agony of betrayal struck deeper than this. Albrecht and Sebastian…the two of them forgot about me. What should I have expected? Einar--the golden boy, the glorious, the lone warrior. That was what his name stood for. Yet, he's surrounded by those who care about him.

Sigurd…my wretched father told me that it meant 'Guardian of victory'. What a joke, who am I protecting? Myself? I couldn't even do that. All my life, I had to latch onto Einar. Like a fucking parasite. I know…I just know, even under that charming demeanour, he hates me. Wished to be done with me. Just like father. After all, he's his son. And I'm apparently not.

Something boomed from around me, a voice echoing in the large abyss. I couldn't understand what the hell it was saying. Maybe it was a form of some twisted welcome to whatever I'm going to. Though, I was able to hear only a few words spoken by them.

"Have fun~!"

The stream suddenly changed, the endless white light in front of me had shifted colors. Into a patch of green, my body slowed down just a small bit as I slammed into the ground. The patches of grass cushioning my face first fall into new air.

I remained there, unmoving. Silently sobbing like the pathetic worm that I was. The sounds of numerous screaming from a distance echoed through the area. But my eyes were sealed shut, refusing to open them. I could hear something approaching, beckoning ever closer to me. A murky sensation washed over me. Blinding my eyes for but a second as a cold tingle rummaged through my spine, settling into my back and caressing my heart and brain.

As the gears in my head shifted ever so slightly. The despair and anguish that poisoned my body switched into something unrecognizeable. Yet it was oh so familiar.

Before I could process it, the sounds of multiple footsteps slowly encroached above me. Stopping just a few feet away from me, "Oh, what's this? Is this it?"

"Eh…I don't know. But it looks…alive." A gruff yet twisted voice spoke.

"Well, it doesn't look like anything we have seen before. Could he be the reasons for the screams?"

"Maybe one of them. Pick 'em up. Hopefully our matriarch would know what to do."
