Confidant in the Shadows

She needed to hear something—anything—that would untangle the storm in her mind.

So, instead of returning to her chambers, she slipped through the quieter corridors of the palace, her steps careful, measured. She needed someone who wasn't tangled in this dangerous game with Kaelith. Someone who could see beyond power, politics, and control.

She found herself outside a familiar door.

Knocking once, she waited.

A moment later, the door creaked open, and Lady Evelyne, her most trusted lady-in-waiting, blinked at her in surprise.

"Your Highness?" Evelyne stepped aside quickly. "Come in."

Seraphine stepped inside, pacing before Evelyne could even shut the door behind her.

Evelyne crossed her arms, her sharp gaze assessing. "You only come to me at this hour when something is truly troubling you."

Seraphine stopped, exhaling slowly. "Kaelith wants an heir."

Evelyne's brows lifted slightly, but she didn't look surprised. "And?"

Seraphine turned to her. "And he said he wants me to bear his child—not just any heir."

Evelyne watched her closely. "I see."

Seraphine scoffed, arms wrapping around herself. "You don't seem shocked."

"I'm not," Evelyne admitted. "Anyone with eyes can see that whatever is between you and the prince is far more than just duty."

Seraphine stiffened. "This isn't about feelings. This is about control."

Evelyne studied her for a long moment. Then she spoke, her voice softer now. "Is it?"

Seraphine opened her mouth to argue but found no words.

Evelyne took a step closer. "You came to me, Seraphine, because you're not sure of your own answer. Not because you want mine."

Seraphine clenched her fists.

Evelyne was right.

The real question wasn't what Kaelith wanted.

It was why she hadn't said no.

And why, despite every warning in her mind, the thought of carrying his child wasn't something she could push away.

To be continued…
