Seraphine didn't move. Didn't let herself react to the weight of Kaelith's words.
"I want you by my side, always."
It sounded too much like a promise. And promises could be broken.
Her chin lifted, her voice steady. "If you mean what you say, prove it."
Kaelith's fingers stilled against her cheek. His expression remained unreadable, but something flickered in his eyes—something sharp. "And how would you have me do that?"
Seraphine stepped closer, her breath mingling with his. "If I'm more than just a means to an end, then show me." Her gaze held his, unyielding. "You want me by your side? Then act like it."
A slow, dangerous smile curved Kaelith's lips. "Careful, Seraphine. That almost sounds like a challenge."
"Take it however you want," she shot back.
Kaelith hummed, considering her. Then, with deliberate slowness, he stepped back. "Very well."
Seraphine narrowed her eyes. "That's it?"
"For now." He smirked. "You asked me to prove it. So I will."
Seraphine folded her arms. "And what exactly does that mean?"
Kaelith turned toward his desk, gathering a few documents. "It means you'll see soon enough."
Something in his tone sent a shiver down her spine.
She hated that he could unsettle her so easily.
But she had pushed him.
And now, she would see exactly what that would cost her.
To be continued…
