Seraphine wrenched her arm back, twisting with all her strength. Kieran's grip loosened just enough—she drove her knee up, aiming for his ribs.
He caught the movement, sidestepping smoothly. "Predictable," he murmured.
She didn't give him time to recover. With a sharp pivot, she swung her dagger at his throat.
Kieran barely managed to dodge, the blade grazing his jaw. A thin line of crimson appeared, stark against his pale skin.
Instead of anger, he smiled. "You've gotten better."
Seraphine's heart pounded. She lunged again, but Kieran was faster. He sidestepped, catching her wrist in a vice-like grip.
In a flash, he twisted her arm behind her back, pulling her against him.
"Still not good enough," he whispered against her ear.
Seraphine gritted her teeth. "Let. Me. Go."
She stomped hard on his foot. Kieran hissed in pain, his grip slackening just enough—
Seraphine wrenched free and spun, slashing toward his chest.
This time, Kieran didn't dodge.
Steel met flesh.
His breath hitched as her blade cut through his shirt, drawing another thin line of red.
For the first time, something flickered in his gaze. Not amusement. Not arrogance.
Something darker.
Seraphine didn't wait to see what it was. She turned and ran, disappearing into the trees before he could stop her.
Behind her, Kieran chuckled softly, watching her retreating form.
"Run while you can, little dove," he murmured. "You'll come back to me soon enough."
To be continued…
