The Long Walk

Seraphine's legs were heavy beneath her, the adrenaline that had once coursed through her veins beginning to fade, leaving only the harsh reality of exhaustion in its wake. She didn't know where she was going. She had no destination, no plan beyond simply running.

Karien had told her to run, and she had obeyed, her mind still spinning from the chaos of the last few moments. But now, as the moonlight filtered through the dense trees around her, she felt lost—utterly and completely lost.

The night air was cold against her skin, and the crunch of leaves underfoot was the only sound breaking the oppressive silence. Her thoughts raced, but they felt scattered, disconnected from the moment. She kept moving, putting one foot in front of the other, despite the weariness that pulled at her.

She had to keep going. She couldn't stop. Not now.

Her thoughts flickered to Kaelith. She wondered where he was, if he was still searching for her. But that thought was quickly swallowed by the fear that gripped her chest—what if it was too late? What if he was already too far away, unable to find her in time?

Seraphine shook her head, trying to push the thoughts aside. She needed to focus. She couldn't afford to think about anything but surviving.

Hours seemed to pass as she walked aimlessly through the dense forest, her legs aching, her body drenched in sweat from the exertion. The moon hung high above her, casting eerie shadows across the path, and still, there was no sign of anyone—no indication that she was heading toward safety, or even toward anyone who might help her.

Her mind wandered back to Veylan, to the cold, calculating smirk he had worn when he'd caught her. She couldn't shake the feeling that she had barely escaped with her life, that something darker was at play. But she couldn't dwell on that. She had to stay focused.

The forest grew quieter as the night deepened, the sounds of distant animals fading into the stillness. Seraphine stumbled, her foot catching on a root. She caught herself just in time, her heart pounding in her chest, but the fall had taken its toll. She was too tired to go on much longer.

That's when she heard it—the sound of hooves in the distance.

At first, she thought it was her imagination, the fatigue and stress playing tricks on her. But the sound grew louder, more distinct. Someone was coming.

She stopped, heart racing as the sound grew closer. Was it them? Was Veylan coming after her again? Or maybe it was Kaelith?

A shadow loomed ahead, and Seraphine held her breath. The rider came into view, a dark silhouette against the moonlit backdrop. Her pulse quickened as the figure drew closer, her eyes narrowing to try to make out the person's face.

"Seraphine," came the familiar, deep voice she had been longing to hear.

Kaelith.

Her breath caught in her throat, and for a moment, she could barely comprehend that he was truly here, that he had found her. She blinked, trying to steady herself as he dismounted his horse in one fluid motion and rushed to her side.

"Kaelith…" she whispered, her voice weak from exhaustion.

He didn't hesitate, his hands gently cupping her face as he looked at her with concern, his brow furrowed. "What happened to you? Are you hurt?"

She shook her head, tears threatening to spill. "I... I don't know how I got here. I... I don't know what to do anymore." Her voice cracked with the weight of everything that had happened.

Kaelith pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly as though he was afraid she might slip away from him. "You don't have to know. You're safe now. I won't let anything happen to you."

Seraphine closed her eyes, allowing herself to collapse against him, her body shaking with the release of all the tension that had built up over the last few days. She had never realized how much she needed this—how much she needed him.

After a long moment, she pulled back slightly, looking up at him. "Veylan... he was so close. I almost didn't make it."

Kaelith's jaw clenched as his eyes darkened with fury. "I know. I was tracking him when I saw you running. I'll make sure he pays for what he's done. But right now, you're safe. You don't need to worry about him anymore."

Seraphine nodded, her heart beginning to settle in her chest. "I just... I don't know where we go from here. It feels like the whole world is against us."

Kaelith placed a hand on her shoulder, his touch warm and steady. "We'll figure it out. Together."

The two stood there in the quiet of the forest, the weight of everything pressing on them, but in that moment, Seraphine found a flicker of hope. She wasn't alone anymore. And with Kaelith by her side, she was ready to face whatever came next.
