Night draped its cloak over the town, replacing the fading warmth of sunset with a cool, tense stillness. The laughter and liveliness from earlier had faded, leaving the streets hushed. Lanterns flickered dimly, casting long shadows along the cobblestone paths. The town felt different—as if it held its breath, waiting for something. The occasional creak of a wooden sign or the distant sound of a door closing echoed ominously through the silence.
Luffy, Zoro, and Nami stood in a narrow alley near the docks, concealed by the darkness. Their backs pressed against the rough brick wall, and the damp air clung to their skin. They had decided to wait until nightfall to investigate further. The truth of this town's fear was close, and Luffy was determined to uncover it.
"Alright, let's move carefully," Nami whispered, her eyes sharp, scanning their surroundings. Her voice was hushed but firm, her instincts as a thief and survivor kicking in. "We need to see what that building with the black symbol is. It's the key to this."
Zoro cracked his neck, hand resting lightly on his sword. His muscles tensed beneath his shirt, ready for a fight. "If it turns into a fight, I'm ready," he said, his voice low, a faint smirk on his lips. He welcomed the idea of drawing his blades.
Luffy grinned, his straw hat casting a faint shadow over his face. "Let's find out what these people are so scared of," he said with quiet excitement, his desire for adventure and justice mixing into one.
They crept through the shadows, careful not to draw attention. Their footsteps were light, each step placed with caution. As they neared the large house with reinforced doors, they noticed more details. The black symbol on the wall beside the door was painted crudely, resembling a jagged skull intertwined with chains. A clear mark of oppression.
Two guards stood nearby, armed with rifles. Their uniforms were tattered, but their eyes constantly shifted around nervously—as though they feared the very building they guarded. Their posture was not of confidence but of dread.
From within the house, muffled voices drifted through the thick walls. A low, commanding tone mixed with the nervous replies of others. The tone was not one of simple leadership—it was control, laced with menace.
Luffy signaled to the others. "I'll get closer."
Nami frowned, concern flickering in her eyes. "Be careful. If they catch you…"
Zoro crossed his arms, his gaze steady. "Don't get caught. Or I'll have to cut our way in."
Luffy smirked and melted into the shadows, his footsteps light and deliberate. His time in the system had improved his stealth, and his instincts guided him like a hunter stalking prey. He slipped past the guards, his breath steady, and reached a cracked window at the side of the building. He crouched low, peering inside.
A large wooden table dominated the room. At its head sat a man—broad-shouldered, with dark, slicked-back hair and a scar running down his cheek. His eyes were cold and calculating, exuding power. Captain Harlan. His very presence demanded obedience. Around the table sat several townspeople—older men and women—their faces pale and eyes filled with fear.
"Captain Harlan," one of the townsfolk addressed him cautiously. His voice trembled, but he tried to sound respectful. "The tribute is prepared. We will have it by dawn."
Harlan leaned forward, his fingers tapping the table rhythmically. The tapping was slow, deliberate—like a predator playing with its prey. "Good," he said, his voice smooth but sharp like a blade. "You know what happens if you fail."
The room fell deathly silent. The fear was suffocating. Luffy could see it in their eyes—these people had no freedom. They were prisoners in their own town.
Luffy's fist tightened, his jaw clenching. He felt the familiar anger rising—the same anger he felt whenever he saw cruelty and injustice. He had seen enough.
Slipping back to the others with practiced stealth, Luffy returned to the alley. His face was serious, the usual carefree grin absent.
"He calls himself Captain Harlan. He runs this place like a tyrant. The townspeople have to pay him some kind of tribute by dawn," Luffy said, his voice low but firm.
Nami crossed her arms, her brow furrowed. "A corrupt captain squeezing the town dry. Typical scum." Her voice was laced with disdain, memories of her own past with Arlong briefly flashing through her mind.
Zoro's eyes hardened, his grip tightening on his sword. "What do we do, Captain?"
Luffy looked at both of them. The fire in his eyes burned brighter than ever. "We break him."
The weight of his words hung in the air. There was no hesitation. Tomorrow, the town would see freedom—even if it meant tearing Harlan's hold on it apart with their own hands.
Nami nodded, her fingers brushing the handle of her staff. "I'm in."
Zoro smirked, resting his hand on his sword. "Let's teach this bastard what real strength looks like."
The trio disappeared back into the night, their minds set. By the time the sun rose over this town again, its chains would be broken.
