Chapter 17

"So… are you guys dating now, or is this just your weekly 'freak out over Oliver' session?" Lena asked, lazily sipping her bubble tea.

Amelia choked on her drink. "We are NOT dating!"

Lena raised a perfectly shaped eyebrow. "Oh? Then explain why you've been smiling at your phone like a lovesick idiot for the past week."

"I do NOT—" Amelia paused as her phone buzzed. Oliver: Are we still on for later?

Her heart did a backflip.

Lena smirked. "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize you had a date."

"It's not a date," Amelia hissed. "He just wants to hang out."

"Honey, a boy wants to spend time with you alone, and he's the same one who has been lowkey obsessed with you since forever." Lena popped a boba into her mouth. "That's a date."

Amelia wanted to argue, but… was it?

An hour later, Amelia found herself sitting across from Oliver at a cozy little café. The lighting was warm, the music soft, and the atmosphere a little too romantic for just hanging out.

Oliver seemed oddly nervous, his fingers tapping lightly against his cup.

"So, uh…" he started. "You look… nice."

Amelia blinked. "Oh. Thanks." She tugged at her sweater. She had definitely overthought her outfit.

Oliver cleared his throat. "I mean, you always look nice."

A pause.

Amelia's brain completely short-circuited.

ERROR 404: RESPONSE NOT FOUND.

"…Thanks?"

There was an awkward silence. Oliver rubbed the back of his neck. Amelia fiddled with her straw.

Oh no. This was weird. This wasn't supposed to be weird.

Desperate for a topic, Amelia blurted, "Did you know octopuses have three hearts?"

Oliver stared at her. Then, out of nowhere, he burst out laughing.

She turned bright red. "What?"

"I—" Oliver wheezed. "I don't know why that was the first thing you said, but—" He wiped his eyes. "That was adorable."

Adorable.

Her face felt like it was on fire.

Maybe… just maybe… Lena was right. Maybe this was a date.

And maybe… she didn't mind that at all.
