Chapter 20: The Shadow of Betrayal
Li Yun spent the following days in a constant state of vigilance, feeling the tension grow with each step. The Kingdom of Heaven, with its golden walls and resplendent temples, was on the brink of collapse. What once seemed to be a beacon of light and hope was now being consumed by corruption, a corruption that, he feared, had already begun to take shape within his own allies.
He could no longer ignore the signs. Every time he crossed paths with the soldiers or advisors of the Kingdom, he could feel the hesitation in their eyes, the subtle fear that lingered in the air. The approaching evil was no longer just an external threat, but an insidious force infiltrating the very foundations of the city, eroding the trust among those who should fight side by side.
It was during a meeting with the advisors that Li Yun had the first confirmation that her worst suspicion was becoming a reality. General Bai's voice, usually firm and confident, was now laden with tension.
— Li Yun — said the general, looking him directly in the eyes, — we can no longer ignore what is happening. Our own soldiers are being affected. They are starting to act strangely, as if something is taking over their minds. Corruption is spreading faster than we expected. We can no longer trust everyone around us.
Li Yun remained silent for a moment, absorbing the general's words. He knew that, no matter how much they tried to contain the darkness from outside, the real battle was being fought within each heart. The shadow he feared had spread so subtly and silently that it was now deeply rooted, corrupting the Kingdom of Heaven from within.
"We need more time," replied Li Yun, his voice full of uncertainty. — But I fear that the time we have left is running out. The darkness does not wait.
General Bai sighed, his expression a reflection of his own frustration. He knew that Li Yun was right, but his leader's words did not seem sufficient to contain the growing wave of distrust that was spreading. There was something else, something deeper and darker happening, but no one knew how to confront it.
It was then that Mei Lin, the High Priestess, intervened with an unsettling calmness. She seemed more introspective than ever, as if something had shaken her own convictions.
— Li Yun — she said, her voice soft but firm. — The evil you face is not just an external force. It is not just an entity that wishes to destroy the Kingdom. It's something deeper. The corruption that now ravages the Kingdom of Heaven is fueled by something within ourselves. For our weaknesses, our fears, and our own doubts.
Li Yun felt a pang in his chest. He knew that Mei Lin was speaking the truth, but hearing those words from someone he considered an ally still made him feel more isolated than ever. He looked at the faces of his companions, those who should be by his side in battle, but felt the growing distance between them. The trust was disintegrating.
— What should I do? — he asked, his voice tired but resolute. — What more can I do to save the Kingdom?
Mei Lin did not respond immediately. She closed her eyes for a moment, as if she were listening to something beyond the words. When she finally spoke, her words were like a revelation.
— You can't save the Kingdom alone, Li Yun. The darkness you carry within you is not just a force to be controlled, it is a part of who you are. You must accept that. But more importantly, you must learn to trust others. It is only together, with our flaws and our fears, that we can face this shadow. No matter how strong you are, without trust, without unity, the Kingdom will not survive.
Those words resonated deeply with Li Yun, but he still didn't know how to apply that advice. He felt more isolated than ever, as if the weight of responsibility was crushing him. The power he carried within himself, the light and the shadow, seemed not enough to save the Kingdom. And now, betrayal seemed to be a more real threat than ever.
That night, as he walked through the empty corridors of the palace, Li Yun felt a strange presence around him. He turned around quickly, but there was no one. The darkness seemed to move with a will of its own, as if it were alive. It was when he heard a familiar voice, a voice that made him freeze.
— Do you still think you can save everyone, Li Yun? — said the voice, a whisper that seemed to come from the depths of his own mind. — You cannot control what you are. You will never be able to control the darkness that has already taken hold of you.
Li Yun felt a shiver run down his spine, and the shadow around him seemed to intensify. He tried to concentrate, the golden light in his hands shining brightly, but the shadow seemed to resist, as if it were part of him.
— Who are you? — shouted Li Yun, his voice reverberating off the empty walls.
The figure appeared before him, a distorted shadow of his own fears and insecurities. His eyes shone with immense malice, and his smile was cruel and sarcastic.
— I am you, Li Yun. The part of you that you are afraid to face. The part that you try to hide, but that is always there, waiting to take control.
The shadow advanced, and Li Yun felt his own essence being pulled into it. The fight he feared was before him, not as a physical battle, but as a struggle against his own inner darkness. He didn't know how to win, but he knew that if he didn't, he would lose everything.
With a cry of determination, Li Yun used all the strength of the light that still remained in his being and concentrated it against the shadow that was attacking him. But the shadow seemed to multiply, taking on increasingly grotesque and threatening forms.
— It won't be that easy, Li Yun — said the shadow, laughing. — You can defeat external enemies, but you will never be able to escape from yourself.
Li Yun fought against the darkness with all his might, but the path to victory seemed distant, like a faint light on the horizon. He was about to succumb when, suddenly, Mei Lin's words came to his mind.
"It doesn't matter how strong you are, without trust, without unity, the Kingdom will not survive."
With one last effort, Li Yun remembered that he was not alone. He shouldn't fight against the darkness alone. He looked within himself, accepting his flaws, his fears, and with that, he found a balance between light and shadow. The shadow dissipated, but Li Yun knew that this was just the beginning of an even more difficult battle.
