SHADOWS OVER EVERMERE

The warmth of victory had barely settled before a new storm loomed over Evermere.

Xander had spent the past few weeks working to rebuild the town, restoring homes, ensuring that the people had food and protection, and strengthening the town's defenses. He wanted Evermere to be strong, not just through war, but through unity.

But power was never without its challengers.

On a crisp morning, as Xander prepared to meet with his advisors, a letter arrived.

A summons from Lord Ashford.

Xander sat in his study, the parchment open in his hands. The letter was written in elegant script, but its words carried a veiled threat.

"Lord Xander,

It has come to my attention that you have taken control of Evermere. While I recognize your victory, leadership is not simply won by battle. The nobility must have its say.

Evermere, once under the rule of your father, was part of a greater political structure. I am requesting an audience with you to discuss Evermere's place within the noble courts.

Denying this meeting would be seen as a grave insult. I trust you will not make such an unfortunate mistake.

Lord Ashford"

Xander's jaw tightened.

This was not a request. It was a warning.

Ella found Xander still seated at his desk long after the sun had begun to set.

"You're troubled," she said softly, stepping closer.

He sighed, rubbing his temples. "Evermere is barely standing, and now Ashford wants to test my rule."

Ella frowned, reading the letter over his shoulder. "He doesn't respect you. He sees you as a warrior, not a ruler."

Xander met her gaze. "Then I'll make him see differently."

She touched his arm. "Don't let pride cloud your judgment. If Lord Ashford holds power among the nobles, dismissing him outright could be dangerous."

Xander exhaled slowly. She was right. He had spent his life fighting battles with swords, but this was a different kind of war.

Politics.

And if he wasn't careful, it could destroy everything he had built.

The next morning, Xander sent his response.

"Lord Ashford,

Evermere stands independent, but I am willing to meet and discuss matters of governance. If you truly wish to strengthen alliances, I invite you to Evermere. We shall speak on neutral ground.

I trust you will not make an unfortunate mistake.

Lord Xander of Evermere"

He sealed the letter and handed it to his messenger.

As the man rode off, Xander turned to Luca, who had been watching in silence.

"Prepare the guards," Xander said grimly. "If Ashford comes, I want Evermere ready."

Because deep in his heart, he knew this was only the beginning.
