Chapter 42: The Letter in the Dark

Saanvi's breath hitched as the darkness swallowed them whole. The echo of footsteps grew louder—measured, deliberate.

Satya clenched his fists, stepping protectively in front of Saanvi. "Who's there?" he called out.

No response.

Saanvi tightened her grip on the letter. It felt fragile, as if it would crumble at any moment. She knew they couldn't let it be taken from them.

A flicker of light broke through the shadows. A lantern was lit, illuminating the stone chamber. In its glow, a tall figure emerged from the darkness.

Devraj.

His expression was grim. "You shouldn't be here."

Satya exhaled sharply. "You knew we'd come."

Devraj nodded, stepping closer. His eyes flicked to the letter in Saanvi's hands. "That letter holds dangerous truths."

Saanvi's voice was steady despite the tension. "We deserve to know."

Devraj studied them for a long moment before sighing. "Then read it. But once you do, there's no turning back."

Saanvi unfolded the delicate paper. The ink had faded, but the words were still legible.

---

"To the one who finds this—know that love was never our crime. It was their fear."

"Veer was innocent. He was loyal to the Rathores until the very end. But he discovered something—a secret buried deeper than blood ties. They feared he would expose it. And so, they silenced him."

"I was to suffer the same fate. But I was spared—not out of mercy, but as a warning. A bird in a golden cage."

"If you are reading this, then perhaps fate has given us a second chance. Find the truth, for only then will our souls be free."

"Meera Rathore."

---

The chamber fell silent.

Saanvi's fingers trembled over Meera's signature. She had written this knowing she might never be found.

Satya clenched his jaw. "She knew she was being watched."

Devraj nodded. "She wasn't just a lost lover—she was a prisoner."

Saanvi swallowed hard. "And Veer… he wasn't just executed for loving her. He knew something powerful enough to get him killed."

Satya's mind raced. "The secret he uncovered—it must still exist somewhere."

Devraj looked between them. "If you want the full truth, you'll have to find what Veer discovered. And for that, you'll need to go where no one dares to."

Saanvi's voice was barely a whisper. "Where?"

Devraj's eyes darkened.

"The Rathore family's forbidden chamber—where their deepest secrets were locked away."

A Deadly Pursuit

The air outside was thick with tension as they stepped out of the hidden archives. Satya carefully tucked the letter into his pocket, knowing it was now the most valuable—and dangerous—thing they possessed.

Devraj's voice was low. "If they find out you have that letter, they won't let you leave unharmed."

Saanvi frowned. "Who do you mean by 'they'?"

A cold breeze swept through the halls.

Devraj exhaled. "The ones who have been watching you since the beginning."

Satya's muscles tensed. They were not alone in this search.

And now, they had been noticed.

As they stepped into the courtyard, a sharp sound rang through the air—the snap of a twig.

A shadow moved near the palace gates.

Someone was there. Watching.

And then, without warning—a figure lunged toward them.
