The school felt different.
Sora Nagi walked through the familiar hallways, but the weight of whispers and stares that had once followed him was gone. No one was watching him. No one was whispering behind his back.
He should have felt relieved, but instead, unease crawled under his skin.
He had spent days locked away in his room, avoiding school, avoiding everything. When the rumors had started, he thought he would never escape them. Yet now, as he moved through the crowd, there was nothing.
It didn't make sense.
Sora wasn't the type to seek answers, but this was different. He needed to know why.
---
Lunchtime arrived.
Sora sat alone at his usual spot, the farthest corner of the cafeteria, where no one would bother him. His lunch remained untouched as he stared blankly at the table, his thoughts too tangled to focus on eating.
Then, a shadow appeared over the table.
"Can I sit here?"
Sora didn't need to look up. He already knew who it was.
He hesitated for a moment before giving a small nod.
Nanako Shimuya sat across from him, setting her lunch down with a quiet rustle. She didn't speak right away. Instead, she unwrapped her food, acting like this was normal—as if they had always eaten together.
But nothing about this was normal.
"You've been gone for a while," she said after a few bites.
Sora tensed. "Yeah."
She didn't press further. Instead, she carefully picked at her meal before finally looking up at him.
"The rumors are gone," she stated.
Sora's grip tightened around his chopsticks. "I… noticed."
Nanako leaned slightly forward. "Do you want to know why?"
Sora swallowed. He wasn't sure if he did. Some part of him wanted to pretend this was all just luck, that the world had finally decided to stop caring about him.
But another part of him knew better.
Slowly, he nodded.
Nanako took a breath. "Akio and I made sure they stopped."
Sora blinked, caught off guard by the name. "Akio?"
"My best friend," she explained. "She helped me handle it."
Sora had no idea who Akio Sanagi was. He had never spoken to her, never even noticed her. Yet somehow, this stranger had been involved in silencing the rumors that had been ruining his life.
"…How?"
Nanako explained everything. How the rumors had spread, how they had taken control of the narrative, how they hadn't fought the lies head-on but instead drowned them out with something else.
As she spoke, Sora felt something pressing against his chest—an emotion he couldn't quite place.
By the time she finished, he could barely find his voice.
"I…" His throat was dry. His mind raced with things he wanted to say, but the words tangled together, refusing to come out.
Nanako didn't rush him. She simply waited, watching him with patience he didn't think he deserved.
Sora exhaled shakily. "…Why would you do that?"
Nanako tilted her head slightly. "Because it wasn't fair."
He let out a quiet, hollow laugh. "Since when has life ever been fair?"
Nanako's lips curved into a small smile. "It isn't. But that doesn't mean I have to stand by and do nothing."
Sora lowered his gaze. The warmth in his chest grew stronger, unfamiliar yet overwhelming.
"…Thank you." The words came out in a whisper, barely loud enough to hear.
Nanako's smile widened slightly, but she didn't tease him or downplay his gratitude. She simply nodded.
"You're welcome."
For the first time in a long time, the silence between them didn't feel heavy. It didn't suffocate him.
And as they continued their lunch in quiet companionship, Sora realized something.
The world beyond his window wasn't as lonely as he had thought.
