The school day ended, and the halls emptied slowly. Sora Nagi and Nanako Shimuya walked side by side, their steps quiet against the tile floor.
As they reached the school gates, the soft orange of the setting sun painted the world around them. The gentle breeze played with Nanako's hair, and Sora couldn't help but stare for a moment.
"Thanks for today," Sora said, his voice low but steady.
Nanako turned to him. "You don't have to thank me. I'm glad we spent time together."
Sora paused, his fingers tightening around the strap of his bag. Then, he did something he hadn't done in a long time—he smiled.
Not a small, shy smile. Not a forced one. It was bright, real, and filled with a quiet joy.
"Thank you," he said again, this time with that bright smile.
Nanako's eyes widened a little. She had seen Sora sad, lost, and quiet. But this? This was new. It was like seeing the sun after a long, rainy day.
Her cheeks turned a light shade of pink, and she couldn't help but smile back. "Your smile... It's nice."
Sora felt a warm rush in his chest. "Really?"
"Yeah," she nodded. "You should smile more."
They stood there, the world moving around them but feeling like they were in their own little bubble.
After a moment, Nanako spoke again. "Do you want to walk home together?"
Sora's eyes brightened. "I'd like that."
They started walking. The street was calm, with just a few people passing by. The sound of their footsteps mixed with the soft rustle of leaves.
They talked about small things—homework, the weather, a funny story Nanako heard in class. It was simple, but every word felt important.
As they reached Nanako's house, she turned to Sora. "Will you be okay?"
Sora nodded. "Yeah. I think so."
She gave him a gentle look. "If you need me, I'm just a call away."
"I know. Thank you."
She opened her gate but paused. "Sora?"
"Yeah?"
"I hope I see that smile again tomorrow."
Sora felt his cheeks warm up, but he nodded. "I'll try."
Nanako waved, and Sora stood there until she disappeared inside.
As he walked home, he felt light. His room didn't seem as dark when he opened the door. His bed looked more welcoming, not just a place to hide.
That night, when Sora fell asleep, he dreamed not of shadows and cold, but of sunlight and warm smiles.
For the first time, hope felt real.
